Forestry Urban Wood Utilization Intern

OVERVIEW

The Grand Rapids Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department invites applications for an Urban Wood Utilization internship position. The selected applicant will work in the Forestry Division assisting with the creation and coordination of a network known as the Grand Rapids Urban Wood Utilization Program. 

This program aims to develop and expand an urban wood network for the Grand Rapids community and establish systems to: efficiently move wood resource out of City responsibility; reduce our disposal costs; extend the carbon sequestration of our urban canopy; and get this locally produced resource to its highest best use.

Work will be a hybrid of in office and remotely as needed. Monday through Friday for an estimated 20-25 hours per week. Work will include:

  • Serving as primary contact to the Michigan Urban Wood Network
  • Developing connections with potential end users of wood resources
  • Coordinate log and chip sales for the City
  • Coordinate Urban Wood Utilization Network activities, planning and meetings
  • Keep up to date statistics and analytics of network growth & performance

 

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must have a high school diploma and be enrolled in college to earn credit. Preference will be given to individuals who have taken college courses in Natural Resources, Economics, Non-profit Business, Public Administration and/or Forestry Management, and who have experience with analytical software. GIS knowledge is helpful. Applicant should have the ability to write and follow detailed technical information and be self-motivated and flexible.

 

PROJECTS & DUTIES

Under the supervision of the Parks Superintendent, this position will work with interested parties and stakeholders to build relationships throughout the City. Additional duties might include: coordinating meetings; making presentations; grading wood biproducts; entering and editing information into a GIS or database system.
