Packaging Engineer Intern

THE COMPANY

In the Americas region, HI-LEX has grown steadily in the region, and now has ten (10) manufacturing facilities across the United States, Mexico, and Brazil. In the U.S., HI-LEX operates under three divisions: HI-LEX America in Battle Creek, Michigan; HI-LEX Controls in Hudson, Litchfield, and Hazel Park, Michigan; and Daedong HI-LEX of America in Cusseta, Alabama. The company’s automotive center is in Rochester Hills, Michigan which consists of finance, sales, engineering, testing, and program management, and will serve as the location for the new Director of Human Resources. 

 

POSITION SUMMARY

Our co-op and intern program is intended to provide experience within an automotive supplier that is comprehensive, challenging and rewarding.   Interns will be able to access technical training, on-the job exposure and specific projects in which they can make a mark.   Areas such as designing, development, and testing of packaging solutions for our products. This position will also support analysis of current packaging materials and processes to identify areas for improvement and cost savings.

Each assignment is unique and is tailored to the experiences and interests of our interns as they match our business needs.

 

KEY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions:

  • Assist the Packaging Engineer to design, develop, test and release packaging that is safe and cost effective for the HI-LEX products.
  • Evaluate feasibility of new and modified packaging using analytical engineering tools.
  • Help to ensure all packaging materials are correctly identified and cataloged according to company standards.
  • Collaborating with team members to streamline packaging processes and improve efficiency.
  • Conducting quality control checks on packaged products to ensure they meet company standards.
  • Learning and adhering to all safety procedures and guidelines related to packaging and handling of products.
  • Providing support to other departments as needed and assisting with special projects as assigned by manager.
  • Performs root cause analyses and suggests counter-measures for system failures and quality concerns, prepares problem-solving reports.
  • Interfaces with internal customers & external suppliers.

Secondary Functions:

  • Engages with Lab Technicians, Designers and Product Engineers.
  • Performs competitor-benchmarking activity.
  • Attends program specific internal and external meetings. 
  • Performs other duties as necessary.

Specialized Training, Skills, Abilities, Experience:  

  • Enrolled in an accredited four-year Supply Chain Management, Packaging Design, Industrial Engineering or other equivalent engineering degree curriculum.
  • CAD skills (Catia V5 or Solidworks) and basic knowledge of engineering practices preferred.
  • Knowledge of applicable HI-Lex Controls, Inc. products is preferred.

 

THE PERSON

Education 

  • Required:  High School Graduate and enrollment in College or University
  • Desired:  Enrollment in an accredited University in an Packaging Design or Industrial Engineering program

Functional Experience

  • Required: Must be 18 years or Older
  • Desired: Previous work experience related or unrelated to packaging engineering.

Physical Requirements / Working Conditions:

  • In-Person / office role with accommodations for occasional remote work as agreed with manager.  
  • Office environment with noise from computer peripherals such as mainframe, disk drives and printers and employees. 
  • Factory and lab environments with noise from manufacturing equipment. Exposure to moving equipment, parts and electrical shock.  
  • May be required to lift, carry or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds. 
  • May require some day travel to various HI-LEX locations.
