Strategy & Operations Summer Internship

The Strategy & Operations Team is seeking a summer intern! This internship is an exciting opportunity to get a front row seat into how a start-up decides on and implements their strategy. The internship will have two components: 1) Independent project to support strategy & operations team priorities (details TBD based on intern interest, will culminate in end-of-summer company-wide presentation); and 2) Ad hoc support for the Chief of Staff to the CEO and the CEO (including partnership research and outreach, grant opportunity research and writing, maternal health event research, employee experience initiatives, investor relations and newsletter, quarterly KPI data analysis and reporting, etc.). If interested, the candidate is also welcome to write for our publicly-facing maternal health blog.

The ideal candidate is a versatile, fast-moving generalist and people person who enjoys working on different things every day and works well cross-functionally. The intern must work independently and effectively within a dynamic and ever changing start-up environment and within a multifunctional team. This position is fully remote.

 

About Babyscripts

Babyscripts is a maternal digital health organization with the goal of Better Pregnancies for All. We provide a suite of products aimed at increasing access to care and improving outcomes. Our products aid in understanding and assessing risk early in the pregnancy to provide the patient and care team with the information that they need for the best care possible.

The base of the Babyscripts solution is myJourney, a mobile app with thousands of pieces of clinically-validated content, delivered at the right time in the mom’s pregnancy journey. Built onto myJourney are modules tailored to a patient’s risk level to provide the best-fit support for that patient, while providing care providers with greater insight into the patient’s health and wellbeing.

 

Key Responsibilities

This candidate will report to the Chief of Staff to the CEO. Key responsibilities fall under the following domains:

 

1. Independent project to support strategy & operations team priorities. Details TBD, project will be designed early in the summer based on intern interest. This project will culminate in a company-wide intern showcase presentation to share lessons learned and work conducted during the summer – project design is flexible, possibilities include…

  • Employee experience initiative
  • Working cross-functionally to create a career development framework for employees
  • Data analysis to inform company strategy
  • Sales operations support
  • Any other area the intern may be interested in related to business operations / strategy / employee experience / financial analysis

 

2. Ad hoc support for the Chief of Staff to the CEO. This might include…

  • Developing a partnership and networking strategy – Research on potential partners at national and regional / local levels, and outreach to develop relationships with those partners
  • Grant opportunity research to bring Babyscripts to nonprofit health systems, and writing support on applications
  • Researching national, regional, and local maternal health events and making strategic recommendations about attendance and investment
  • Writing and layout of monthly advisor newsletters
  • Prep for employee All Hands meetings
  • Data analysis and visualization of company key performance indicator (KPI) data
  • Evaluation and improvement of internal Babyscripts employee website
  • Sales operations support
  • Additional ad hoc support for CEO and/or other members of company leadership team, as needed
  • Conducting due diligence on potential companies / organizations / strategic partners
  • Supporting CEO directly with partnership outreach, slideware, talking points, and background documents for externally-facing event and/or strategic meetings with potential partners

 

3. If interested, the intern is also invited to work with our marketing team to write externally-facing blog posts for our website on a topic of their choice (in the past, interns wrote about the implications of Medicaid’s postpartum expansion and on population health strategies to improve maternal health).

 

Required Experience

  • Current enrollment in undergraduate or graduate degree program
  • A passion for improving the status quo of maternal healthcare
  • Operationally-minded but strategic – you can get in the details but also see the big picture
  • Intellectually curious – you may not be a specialist at everything you’re asked to do, but you have an unending desire to learn and become a wealth of knowledge
  • Strong project management skills, ability to work independently, organized, skilled in juggling multiple projects and priorities at once
  • Willingness to try new things and jump in to learn quickly on the job; flexible personality
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to know how to tailor written and verbal communication to a specific audience
  • Experience with slides / slideware, particularly in Google Slides

 

Preferred Experience

  • Experience working in a start-up environment
  • Experience and/or passion for healthcare, public health, digital health, and/or innovation
  • Data analysis/visualization skills
  • Expertise in cradle-to-grave metric management: development, implementation, monitoring and reporting on core company health metrics
  • Experience with employee experience programming (e.g., development events, manager trainings, culture-building activities)
  • Experience working in business operations

 

Internship Program Description

  • Babyscripts will have ~2 interns this summer across our various departments
  • In addition to working with an intern’s assigned department, we’ll also have internship programming throughout the summer to enhance interns’ experience and sense of community. We want all interns to get to know the company, leadership team, and founder, and to get exposure to a wide range of perspectives on what it’s like to work at a start-up! Potential programming may include:
    • Onboarding to Babyscripts 101 and introduction to each department
    • Meeting with the company founder to understand their path to founding a start-up and to hear their reflections on digital health innovation, career advice for students, etc.
    • Meetings with department heads to understand their path to Babyscripts and to get exposure to different departments across the company
    • Weekly meetings with other interns and the internship program coordinator for social purposes, and to check in on how things are going, etc.
    • Final Intern Showcase presentation for full company at end of summer to share about independent project learnings & outcomes
    • Attendance at Company All Hands meetings and other cross-company events (lunch speakers, cross-department work showcases)
    • Additional social events throughout the summer (primarily virtually, but potentially in person for interns based in Washington, DC)
  • Opportunity to secure a full-time, post-graduation offer, based on performance

 

Logistics & Compensation

  • This position is open to both graduate and undergraduate students.
  • The candidate must be able to successfully work remotely. The candidate must have experience designing and establishing a productive, efficient, and balanced WFH routine so as not to detrimentally affect either professional outcomes or personal life.
  • While Babyscripts employees primarily work remotely, if the employee is located in the Washington, DC area, they are welcome to work from the DC office if they want. This is fully optional, and no preference will be given to intern candidates located in the DC area.
  • The desired internship length is 8-12 weeks, full-time. Internships may occur at any time during the summer (mid-May through mid-September, we are happy to work with students to find the best schedule that works for them (e.g., happy to accommodate academic schedules, summer travel, etc.)
  • This is an unpaid internship primarily for educational purposes; the internship will provide training to augment students’ coursework in their academic program; a moderate stipend will be provided to offset living expenses
  • Babyscripts is happy to work with university programs to provide academic credit for the internship upon request
  • No travel is expected for this internship.
  • Interns will be expected to use their own personal laptops and cell phones for this internship.
