NHQ: COMM - Spanish Translator / Proofreader Intern

This internship supports the National Headquarters (NHQ) Communications (COMM) department, specifically the Multicultural Communications team. This is a 100% virtual opportunity. Interns will have a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the mission of the American Red Cross, utilizing their knowledge and experience while also gaining valuable insights and learning experiences from the organization.

 

Required qualifications: 

• Undergraduate senior majoring in linguistics, intercultural or corporate communications, translation, journalism, Spanish philology, interpretation, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience (professional certification in translation). 

• Prior experience translating from English to Spanish is a must for this position; a work-sample portfolio is strongly recommended. 

• Ability to effectively bridge the language gap—exceptional proofreading, grammar, and writing skills in Spanish and English. 

• A strong eye for detail; ability to identify grammar, syntax, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, fluency and style errors. 

• Strong computer skills, including advanced knowledge and command of Microsoft 365 (Word and Excel). Must have a phone, computer, and reliable internet connection.

Preferred qualifications: 

• Perfect command of Spanish (native/near native tongue, primary work language) and excellent knowledge of English. 

• Experience with computer-aided translation tools, such as Crowdin or similar. 

• Interest in pursuing further education, specialization and language fluency assessments for certification.

 

Expected Responsibilities: 

• Proofread or post-edit machine-translated (MTPE) content and apply corrections. 

• Translate/proofread internal and external documents upon request and on an on-call basis. 

• Utilize translation software (CAT) for efficiency and consistency. 

• Adhere to Red Cross translation style and terminology guidelines, ensuring completed work follows established standards. 

• Consult with subject matter experts to understand specialized concepts and translate them appropriately.

 

Time Commitment: 3-10 hours per week, during standard business hours (M-F 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. - ET)
