You’ll be joining a cohort of talented students from a variety of schools across the U.S. We hire interns into the following positions: Process Engineering, R&D, Strategic Sourcing, Technical Sales, Supply Chain, Product Marketing, Information Technology, and more. 

  

The projects we task our interns to lead are impactful and meaningful to our organization. You’ll be supported by your Manager and Mentor to gain in-depth knowledge of the adhesive industry and collaborate with various departments and functions. Internship Location: Maple Grove, MN. 

 

Our Internship Experience includes: 

  • 12-week paid program beginning the end of May to mid-August to gain insight and knowledge in your field.

Position Overview  
In general, the intern reports to the Facility Manager and has primary responsibility to apply both theoretical and practical engineering principles.   

 

Primary Duties  

This individual may be responsible for a specific project related to scaling up a process from one of our compounders to another compounder.  The individual may also be involved with bringing the documentation and SOP process up to company standards. In the course of this work, the intern will be involved in a variety of activities which may include:  

  • Working directly with the entire Maple Grove team (Production and Maintenance) on the manufacturing floor to drive process and manufacturing improvements related to preventative maintenance. 
  • Digitize and/or complete the all the facility piping and instrumentation diagram (P&ID) to drive preventative maintenance activities, infrastructure sustainability, and ready the plant for future expansion. 
  • Complete all process documentation and SOP processes to standard form 
  • Serves as a team leader/member in operational efficiency, standard operating procedure and process improvement projects for the facility, in an effort to increase operational discipline and reduce cost of poor quality (CoPQ).
  • Provides support to facility manager, shift managers, regional process engineer, operations, and R&D personnel in process improvement, process transfer, and technology improvements. 
  • Research, specify, and document specifications for major unit operations equipment in H.B. Fuller Maple Grove plant. Such equipment would include mixers, compounding equipment, heat exchangers, pumps, screener pump hold tanks, and other ancillary equipment.  
  • Conducts routine chemical engineering calculations in unit operations analysis in support of manufacturing and process development; assists higher level engineers by performing assigned phases of work in more complex engineering problems. 
  • Analyzes and interprets data; should be able to propose hypotheses as explanations of phenomena, and design experimental studies to test (disprove) these hypotheses. 
  • Leads by example in the areas of safety improvement and the application of quality measures. 

 

Required Qualifications  

  • Currently pursuing Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering
  • Must have majority of Junior level coursework complete (e.g., fluid mechanics, heat transfer, reaction kinetics, mass transfer, and junior level unit operations lab) 
  • Skills and ability to evaluate and optimize manufacturing processes 
  • Awareness and/or Training in Lean and Six Sigma methodologies 
  • Ability to effectively interacting with R&D and plant personnel, OEMs, and internal functional groups. 
  • Comfortable working daily in a manufacturing shop floor environment 

Preferred Qualifications   

  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications, MS Project, MiniTab and AutoCad 
  • Basic knowledge of Continuous Improvement (CI) concepts (Kanban, Kaizen, LSS) 
  • 1+ year practical process or applications engineering experience in industry 
  • Knowledge of the adhesive industry (manufacturing processes, equipment, substrates, test methods, and chemistry). 

 

Physical Environment  

  • Working in factory/manufacturing environment 
  • While performing the duties of this position the employee is regularly required to stand. 
  • The employee is frequently required to walk, climb stairs, use hands to remove or lift boxes, stretch and reach with arms extended, and stoop. 
  • Minimal Travel within the Minneapolis & St Paul, MN area 

 

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, and geographic location.

 

The salary for this role is $22 - $25 per hour based on major.
