Internship- Distance Learning and Education

Position Summary 

In this position you will have the opportunity to be a part of an exciting and innovative education and interpretation team at Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. The primary duties of this position are to assist rangers with long-distance programs with classes (K-12) and support outreach and education efforts by the park. Education rangers conduct classes for approximately 3,000 students and teachers throughout the country through videoconferencing in January and February. Using greenscreen technology, rangers take students on virtual visits to Glacier Bay.

Key Duties and Responsibilities 

The primary function of this position will be to keep the long-distance learning program running smoothly and effectively. Because this duty location is 4 hours behind Eastern Standard Time, work days will sometimes start as early as 5:00 A.M.; This position will also help with pre-visit mail outs, test connections, record keeping, education demo recording, program development and presenting. You will also respond to student information requests by email and letter, as well as help with updating our student outreach information packets along with planning and preparing for summer day camp activities.

Marginal Duties 

In addition, you will have the opportunity to work on media projects such as assisting with the park social media channels by providing writing, photography or videography. This contributes to a wide range of content on the park's social media channels: e.g. educational information, safety updates, news releases, and more. Focusing on park needs, another opportunity is to maintain, edit, or create content for the park's web presence on nps.gov. You may also assist in maintaining and editing content to Glacier Bay's presence on the official NPS mobile app. This could include: changing/updating information presented on the app, recording or adding audio clips to existing tours to make the content accessible, creating new self-guiding tours on the app, and adding new locations not yet represented. As needed, you could also assist with the park’s wide array of media products by helping organize and categorize photos and videos on the park's media archive.

Living Accommodations 

Park housing is shared and located near park headquarters in Bartlett Cove in Gustavus, AK. Common areas like kitchen and living room are shared, and the intern may share a room with another person of the same gender.

Compensation  

$1,600 - one time RT travel allowance

$600 - weekly living allowance

$500 - duty related travel & reimbursable expenses

Housing provided - located near park headquarters in Bartlett Cove

Not AmeriCorps eligible

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
