Circulation Desk Assistant-Educational Resources Lab

The Educational Resources Lab (ERL) is seeking a student with approved work study for the upcoming winter semester to work as a Circulation Desk Assistant. The ERL is a busy student support services area. This position assists patrons with library and technology questions, including check-in/check-out of library materials and technology, and completes routine circulation desk procedures. This position may require some evening availability.

A successful candidate should possess the following abilities and characteristics: strong interpersonal and communication skills; basic computer skills, including most Microsoft applications; the ability to operate and assist patrons with the use of ERL equipment, including copying, printing, faxing, and basic computer use; the ability to work well with a variety of people; the ability to perform detailed, accurate work with little supervision. The desire and ability to provide students, staff, and faculty with the best customer service possible is the most essential characteristic and skill for this position.

Duties are varied and may include the following:  

  • Assisting patrons at the Circulation Desk and on the phone
  • Providing first-level technology troubleshooting
  • Referring patron to the appropriate regular staff member when necessary
  • Monitoring ERL email account and calendar
  • Preparing technology reservations for faculty/staff pickup
  • Checking materials in and out and ensuring that policies and practices for circulating items are being followed
  • Assisting patrons with basic catalog searches, locating items on shelves, printing and copying tasks
  • Ensuring all shelves are in order, clean, and look tidy
  • Straightening tables and chairs and keeping ERL looking orderly and clean
  • Pulling books and materials as directed for faculty or class use
  • Creating displays of books and materials
  • Assisting with book processing tasks
  • Typing bibliographies and performing other clerical tasks, special projects, and errands
  • Emptying book drop boxes
  • Recording ERL or book statistics
  • Counting/locking laptop carts
  • Keeping supplies filled
