Arts in Medicine Intern Overview
The Arts in Medicine department supports NYC Health + Hospital's mission by working to advance health equity and staff wellbeing through evidence-based arts and cultural experiences. This Internship is a comprehensive introduction to the field of Arts-in-Health, with a focus on how evidence-based arts and cultural initiatives are used to support healthy communities and advance health equity.
The intern will have an opportunity to learn about all areas of the department including collection management, curatorial, and programming.
Responsibilities
- The intern will primarily be responsible for supporting programmatic initiatives including the Creative Center’s Artist-in-Residence Program (AIR), the Community Mural Program (CMP), the HHArt of Medicine, Music for the Soul (MFTS), and a poet-in-residence pilot.
- The intern will observe, document, and assist with the implementation at these programs across multiple NYC Health + Hospitals healthcare facilities. Arts in Medicine's programs are similar museum education and community arts initiatives.
- Additionally, the intern will have the opportunity to be involved with curatorial projects including attending planning meetings and installations; writing artwork / exhibition didactic labels; and developing engaging content for the Bloomberg Connects app.
Possible Areas of Focus and Responsibilities Include:
- Contribute to research and evaluation efforts including data collection, analysis, and interpretation.
- Observe and document various art programs and exhibition installations at multiple NYC Health + Hospitals healthcare facilities. Programs include the Creative Center’s Artist-in-Residence (AIR), Community Mural Program (CMP), the HHArt of Medicine, Music for the Soul (MFTS), and a poet-in-residence pilot.
- Assist artists, art therapists, teaching artists/educators, and curatorial staff with planning, preparation, and implementation of installations and programs at NYC Health + Hospitals healthcare facilities.
- Write didactic labels for artworks / exhibitions, and engaging content for Arts in Medicine on the Bloomberg Connects app
- Support the work of the Assistant Vice President for Arts in Medicine on logistics related to the development of a social prescribing model for NYC Health + Hospitals / Jacobi
- Support civic engagement efforts, including identifying and helping to build relationships between Arts and Medicine and arts / cultural organizations
General Responsibilities include:
- Participate in and write synopses for curatorial and programmatic planning meetings with Arts in Medicine staff, cultural partners, artists, healthcare staff (e.g. leadership, physicians, creative arts therapists, etc.), teaching artists / educators, and more. Following the meetings, the intern will have time reflect, and share feedback with the Director of Programming and/or the Associate Curator & Senior Project Manager
- Support event planning for large scale artmaking and public programs including planning and implementation
- Support the Arts in Medicine tasks with other tasks as needed
Requirements, Skills, and Qualifications
Successful candidates will have an eagerness to learn, values that align with NYC Health + Hospitals' mission, curiosity and deep interest in the arts, and a commitment to social justice. Interest and/or experience in public health is a plus.
This position includes responsibilities that will be executed collaboratively which requires:
- Ability to actively listen and have the desire and capacity to treat everyone with kindness and empathy.
- In addition to collaborative work, position includes projects and tasks that must be completed independently–once given the appropriate guidance. Candidates, therefore, must have the ability to think proactively, problem solve, and be resourceful.
- The internship requires onsite work at healthcare facilities across the five boroughs, the selected intern must have the energy and willingness to travel to the various facilities.
- Candidates must have the skills and experience to support daily written communication, and use of Microsoft Office and Google Drive.
- Competitive applicants will have experience in one or more of the following areas: event planning, collection archives and databases, using spreadsheets, knowledge and experience working with art materials.
Compensation
$22.50 per hour
INTERNS WILL WORK 28 HOURS PER WEEK AND ATTEND A MANDATORY OFFSITE PROGRAM DAY ONE DAY PER WEEK WITH THEIR COHORT.
Internship Period: June 2 – August 4
Total Weeks: 9 weeks

Workdays: 4 days per week onsite, 9:30 AM–5:30 PM, Monday to Thursday, with occasional Saturdays
PROGRAM DAY:
On Fridays, interns will attend an offsite program day with their cohort.
These hours are separate from the internship hours.
