  • Application Notes: For the inaugural session of this internship, applications will be accepted from March 17 - April 11, 2025. Generally, applications will be accepted from: January 1 to March 31 for May or June start dates; May 1 to June 30 for August or September start dates; and October 1 to November 1 for January or February start dates. A successful candidate will demonstrate attention to detail, and ability for critical and adaptive thinking. They will also have skills and knowledge in one or more archives and archival practices; library and information science; cartography, geography, history and languages and linguistics. Only complete applications will be reviewed. A complete application consists of a cover Letter of Interest, Federal Style Résumé, and most recent transcripts (official or unofficial). After a complete application is received, a candidate may be asked to answer relevant questions to further establish their qualifications for the internship.
  • Compensation: GS-03/01 level with Washington-Baltimore-Arlington locality pay
  • Academic Credit: No Credit
  • Available Benefits: Library Store discounts, and onsite interns may be eligible for a transit subsidy
  • Program Duration: Short-term. Internships will take place over the course of a summer, fall, or spring semester for 12 weeks per session based on project requirements.
  • Qualifications: Currently enrolled students (undergraduate, graduate) and those who have graduated in the twelve months prior to their internship start date.

 

Exploring the World: Geography and Map Internship Program aspires to provide undergraduate, graduate, and recent graduate students an opportunity to conduct independent research, and scholarly study using the Geography and Map Division (GMD) and other Library resources and collections. Participants will be mentored by GMD’s experienced and specialized staff. In addition to working alongside GMD’s staff and conducting research, participants will have access to:

  • Professional Development Series offered by HCD (free to division)
  • Networking with professional librarian and other library interns
  • Attending and participating in professional events, webinars, LOC hosted courses and events
