Field Engineer

May - December 2018 • Maspeth, NY

What I liked

I was given the opportunity to take on many of the same responsibilities and a similar work load to that of a first year engineer. And if I ever felt the desire for more work my supervisors have never been afraid to add to my current load. This allowed me to take full advantage of the work place. Everyday I've learned new things and have always had a feeling of accomplishment for the work I completed. There has not been a single day where I've felt as though my time was wasted.

What I wish was different

I would have appreciated being given more assistance with certain tasks, however on the flip side, I am grateful to have not been given extra help. This forced me to get out of my comfort zone and often times teach myself, and work my way through problems I had never encountered before. The nature of the work I have done has required me to spend almost all of my time in the field, and allowed me to work directly with foreman and laborers to accomplish tasks on site while applying what I've learned in the classroom.

Advice

My most important bit of advice, is to have courage to try things you have never done before, and things you don't know how to do. It can be scary at times, because it's not all theory from a classroom anymore. You are working on real projects that affect real people. We are on these internships in order to learn, and the best way to do that is to throw yourself into the deep end. There are always people willing to help, you just need the courage to speak up.
