Material Handler

December 2018 • Onalaska, WI

What I liked

It's consistent work and you will never be shorted hours. The work is hard but it gets easier once you are more experienced. The pay is also very good.

What I wish was different

I wish that my pull rate numbers from the first month of the job didn't count towards my probationary pull rate. I worked full-time for the first month of the job and then only worked Saturdays during the semester. On those Saturdays, I was pulling the amount that I needed to but during my first month I was still pulling below the required rate because I was still learning so after my 3 month probationary period was over, it looked like I was pulling slower than what I actually pulled so I had to wait another three months to get a raise.

Advice

This is a great college summer job. I had a second job and were willing to work around my schedule. I was still able to reach 40-45 hours a week. Make sure you ask as many questions as you can once you start because the faster you become acclimated to the job, the better your pulling rate will be which will put you in a position to be successful.

Cashier and Sales Floor Associate

August 2017 • Menomonee Falls, WI

What I liked

I enjoy how I am able to hold responsibility for my self while working as a team with my other coworkers. I do not just talk with guests but I also make sure that merchandise is ready and presentable. The job has taught me a lot about patience and discipline when it comes to interacting with store leaders and employers.

What I wish was different

The only down fall is that I feel that my current employeer doesn't take the time to interact with potential employees. Due to this, we've had people come and leave within a month. Also some of the employees that are hired do not seem as dedicated or struggle with showing self control. Even though the store could always use new employees, I feel that it's important to hire healthy, anxious free, and energetic people. Having workers that constantly complain about their jobs, while anxiously waiting for their breaks and their clock out puts a damper on the mood.

Advice

To make sure not to have the same poor behavior of your peers. It's also important to inspire those whom struggle with the job to have fun and try.

Retail Co-Worker

May - August 2018 • Verona, WI

What I liked

I was able to be in a familiar environment since this has been my recurring job for the last few years and I was able to add on responsibilities. The skills I learned all applied to my current job and I felt I was able to grow as an employee and offer more to my job through having this internship opportunity.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more chances to practice what I learned from my internship.

Advice

If you take an internship through your current job, make sure that you work out a schedule on when to be able to apply the information you learn. I didn't not have specific days planned so there were times where I would have to practice new skills while juggling my current responsibilities on days were it would get consistently busy.
