Software Engineering Intern

June - September 2016 • Menlo Park, CA

What I liked

It paid well. The housing was nice and free. I lived in Mountain View, which was next to the Bay, so I could go out on runs. My fellow interns were nice.

What I wish was different

I wish my project had been more interesting. I had to write testing code -- for network switches.... Also, the company felt very insulated from the outside world. My internship became my life, and it wasn't a fun job either.

Advice

If you're into theoretical CS, then network testing is (most probably) NOT for you. If you're going to intern at Facebook, choose your team wisely.

I loved the opportunities for learning, through talks with company leaders (intern talks with Mark Zuckerberg, Sheryl Sandberg, Kevin Systrom, etc.) and through the project.

Software Engineering Intern

What I liked

They did an excellent job of matching students to their interests. I had a love for AI and was placed in the machine learning division and had a lot of my team mates working on research.

What I wish was different

Nothing really.

Advice

It is valuable to communicate with your team and meet other interns and employees.

Data Science Intern

June - September 2017 • Menlo Park, CA

What I liked

The data science role at Facebook is an embedded data science role, so you work closely within a specific team. This is a really interesting role for anyone who is curious how data science can be used to directly shape product strategy.

What I wish was different

I would have liked to do more rigorous analytical work. There wasn't much work involving more rigorous/mathematical data science

Advice

Make a strong effort to get to know your team and how you can best support them. A successful internship will give you valuable experience with not only your personal intern project but also with how a team operates.

Data Analytics Intern

June - August 2017 • Menlo Park, CA

What I liked

Facebook is a fantastic company to work for. It has a very open but fast-paced working environment where you learn a lot from the best in the industry and get the chance to apply your skills to solutions that affect hundreds of millions of people. The employee benefits are great too.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more time to work there.

Advice

Go for it with an open mind and positive attitude. Make sure you get some rest in-between school and the internship so that you start with a lot of energy. Keep your concentration up and take time to review your performance regularly and rest when necessary.

What I liked

Facebook has great benefits, and great people! Also, they treat you like an employee as opposed to an intern, and they give you a lot of responsibility.

What I wish was different

Shorter internship, because 3 months was quite a long time.

Advice

Take initiative, and don't be afraid to share your own ideas.

Product Design Intern

May - August 2017 • Menlo Park, CA

What I liked

- Amazingly well-organized internship. Incredible events, housing, socialization with other interns. I cannot stress how amazing the benefits are-- completely paid corporate housing, incredible food, and a million other things. You will live in luxury. - 2 weeks of orientation to get new designers up to speed - Incredible autonomy, really dedicated manager - Constant and well-defined feedback

What I wish was different

The only issue I had had nothing to do with the intern program and more to do with Facebook as a company-- it is very much a stress build-things-fast culture, and engineering always comes first, so standing up for yourself as a designer and pushing back / being proactive is crucial. It is a very social company and there are a million meetings. Designers at Facebook don't code so if you want to see your design actually get shipped you have to be able to convince others/constantly build consensus. Most design interns won't see their designs shipped within their internship for this reason.

Advice

Be proactive from the beginning about working with engineers and PMs. Facebook lacks a clear hierarchy and your effectiveness depends on how well you build consensus and reach out to others.

Content Strategy Intern

May - August 2018 • Menlo Park, CA

What I liked

Interns are treated like full-time employees, and that sense of autonomy was very rewarding. The work itself was absolutely incredible — working on developing a platform with two billion users means that even the smallest details make a huge impact. I also felt extremely lucky to be working on the Social Good team, as it dealt directly with leveraging Facebook's massive scale to do substantial good in the world.

What I wish was different

Nothing.

Advice

At Facebook, I was surrounded by arguably some of the most brilliant minds in the world on a daily basis. One might assume that meant that there were a lot of egos rubbing up against each other. However, that couldn't be further from the truth — everyone there was incredibly humble. My coworkers at Facebook taught me that modesty is the most effective value to combine with intelligence. It helps build an innately positive and collaborative environment where truly amazing ideas can be created.

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Menlo Park, CA

What I liked

Mature company with great internal tooling. Work was fast paced, but helpful peers made it feasible and enjoyable.

What I wish was different

I wish that the work had played on my strengths and interests a little bit more, but with the number of interns that Facebook hires, I understand that it is not always possible. Furthermore, I also was able to learn new things as a result of this, so maybe it was for the best.

Advice

Be ready to work pretty hard. Hit the ground running, ask a lot of questions and really take ownership.
