Whirlpool Corporation

Noise & Vibration Engineer

June 2016 • Benton Harbor, MI

What I liked

My work contribution in the research & engineering division at Whirlpool gives me a great pleasure to always find that my work directly creates value to millions of consumers around the globe making their daily lives easier. The opportunity to work with a global team placed in 4 continents makes it highly exciting to bring the innovation that can commonly benefit even the cross-cultural interests. At Whirlpool, I was given the freedom to critically think, challenge ideas in a team & thus help towards bringing only the best work to reality on behalf of the company. I like that my insights, comments are always taken into consideration towards eventual decision making. At last, most importantly, managers & peers here push you above your limits while still being helpful with a positive intention to grow together inclusively.

What I wish was different

The fact that the company is huge & is diversified across continents, makes it hard initially, to find & meet the right people to reach out for collaboration as part of cross-functional projects. Although it doesn't result in heavy loss of time,. I wish there was a much seamless process to understand the overall roles, responsibilities & skill sets of employees working at any point of time.

Advice

The biggest take-away so far from my experience is: You can always be confident in demonstrating your work as long as you provide a clear line-of-thought that impacts the end-consumer - the key stakeholders. In this process, especially for fresh graduates, it's okay to make mistakes sometimes when you are new to the work force but what's more important is not to make the same mistake again"

Global Supply Chain Leadership Development Program Intern

May - August 2018 • Benton Harbor, MI

What I liked

Whirlpool provided a great summer internship program. I was able to grow both personally and professionally from experiences provided to me inside and outside of the office. From participating in different Lunch and Learns with various company leaders, to volunteer opportunities in the community, to 1-1 meetings with people in different business functions - Whirlpool truly provided their interns with the best experience possible.

Business Analyst

May - August 2018 • Benton Harbor, MI

What I liked

Whirlpool had a heavy emphasis on networking. They often held workshops to update your LinkedIn, how to write good emails, etc. It was also required for me to give several presentations throughout my internship. I think I developed my communication and presentation skills.

What I wish was different

There was zero structure to the program. I often felt like I was wasting my time there. Whirlpool recruited for students with computer science/information systems/computer systems background...but our skills were not utilized. It was all more or less clerical work.

Advice

Utilize the resources around you and get involved with volunteer experiences. They lend to a more meaningful internship.

Network as much as you can as an intern. You’re in a special position where you need no reason besides “interest” to talk to all walks of employees.
