The Network Intern assists IT teams with maintaining, troubleshooting, and improving computer and network systems throughout the MBTA. They will work under the guidance of more experienced network engineers / administrators, gaining hands-on experience with network devices, protocols, and security measures. Networking concepts used at the MBTA include TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, subnets, VLANs, etc.

The most qualified (or ideal) candidate would have an Associate’s degree or equivalent in an Information Technology related field, with at least one (1) year of experience in computer / network administration, and above average communication skills. We are looking to hire one (1) intern, who will work five (5) days in-office (40 hours per week) for at least three (3) months.

Please note that this internship is for undergraduate college students only.

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities 

 

  • Assist with monitoring and maintenance of LAN/WAN networks, firewalls, routers, switches, and wireless access points.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting of network connectivity issues across agency offices, transit hubs, and vehicle systems.
  • Support network documentation efforts, including diagrams, IP address records, hardware inventories, and change logs.
  • Assist in implementing network security measures, including user access controls, patch management, and firewall rule reviews.
  • Participate in network performance monitoring using agency tools (SNMP, syslog, Wireshark, etc.).
  • Help with setup and configuration of hardware such as servers, switches, and cabling in data centers as well as remote locations.
  • Provide technical support to agency staff with guidance from IT team.
  • Learn and adhere to all cybersecurity, privacy, and public-sector compliance standards relevant to transit operations.
  • Participate in team / staff meetings, organization events, fieldwork, project teams, or other duties as needed.
  • Perform all other duties and projects that may be assigned.

Minimum Education 

 

  • Enrolled, for entire duration of employment, in an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree program of an accredited college / university in Information Technology, Computer Science, Network Administration, or related field.

 

Minimum Experience and Required Skills

  • Basic understanding of networking concepts (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, subnets, VLANs, etc.).
  • Familiarity with Windows and/or Linux operating systems.
  • Eagerness to learn and apply new technologies in real-world environments.
  • Advanced communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to independently commute to assigned work locations in the Boston, MA metro area, as required by the role.
  • Authorized to work in the United States (international students in CPT, STEM, or OPT programs through a university are eligible to apply).
