College Intern, Recreation and Community Services Administration

The City offers unique opportunities for students to gain hands-on and in-depth experience in a variety of disciplines related to local, regional, state, and federal government operations. We provide real-world work assignments, which provide interns the opportunity to work side-by-side with professional City staff committed to teamwork and providing superior municipal services to the community of Santa Clarita.
The chosen candidate will contribute to various assignments that both assist with future planning of department projects/programs and help identify opportunities for improvement with current processes. The ideal candidate will also assist with research, data collection, City-wide projects and presentations, and statistical reports.
SALARY:
$20.06 - 25.41/hour (Undergrad Level)
$26.78 – 32.13/hour (Graduate Level)
This position is expected to work an average of 20-25 hours per week. The anticipated duration of this internship is approximately 6 to 12 months, but may end earlier or be extended depending on department needs.
DESCRIPTION/DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists with budget tracking
- Conducts research and data analysis
- Prepares materials such as handouts, reports, spreadsheets, and presentations on a variety of topics
- Analyzes and prepares recommendations related to process efficiency
- Researches and analyzes applicable federal, state, and regional data
- Researches and assists with tracking funding through state and federal grant opportunities
- Attends various weekly, monthly, and quarterly meetings
- Establishes positive working relationships with City employees, outside agencies, and the public
- Provides administrative and project support, as needed

- Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain extensive and accurate records, ensuring all work is completed thoroughly and professionally
- Demonstrates excellent customer service skills with internal employees in a professional and timely manner
- Strong computer skills and the ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and other computer programs to generate letters, spreadsheets, presentations, and reports
- Reliable team player who works well independently and collaboratively
- The ability to lift, drag, and push files, paper, and documents weighing up to 25 pounds
EDUCATION:
If you are currently an undergraduate student or recent graduate with a field of study of Recreation Management, Public Administration, Social Science, or a related field, and are interested in gaining meaningful hands-on work experience at the local government level, this opportunity may be for you.

As a City of Santa Clarita public employee, you may be called upon to work as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW) in the event of an emergency (in accordance with Government Code §§ 3100-3109). Before entering upon the duties of employment, all public employees, except those excluded by law, take and subscribe to an oath or affirmation set forth in the California Constitution, declaring them to be Disaster Service Workers in time of need.
In addition, part-time, temporary, and seasonal (PTS) employees may be required to participate in the DMV Employer Pull-Notice Program. This program authorizes the City to receive a driver record report upon enrollment and during employment.
This is not a designated Retired Annuitant position. If you are a California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) retiree, you may be required to reinstate into CalPERS.
Part-time, temporary, and seasonal (PTS) workers are at-will.
