Program Overview

The 2026 Summer Medical & Public Health Internship in Ghana provides students and recent graduates with hands-on experience in clinical and community health. Interns are placed in either Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital or LEKMA Polyclinic and participate in structured community outreach programs, gaining practical skills in patient care, public health education, and preventive medicine.

This internship is ideal for students pursuing studies in Medicine, Nursing, Public Health, or related health fields.

Internship Responsibilities

Interns may participate in:

Hospital Observations:
• Observe medical practitioners diagnosing and treating patients
• Assist with minor tasks under supervision
• Gain exposure to professional healthcare practices

Community Outreach:
• Participate in outreach programs twice weekly
• Engage in hands-on activities: dressing wounds, checking BMI, measuring blood pressure, malaria testing
• Educate and advise community members on health issues under supervision

Health Education:
• Plan and implement health education workshops
• Collaborate with local health workers to address community-specific health concerns

Support & Administration:
• Assist with patient care administration and medical record organization
• Support the medical team with organizational tasks

Professional Supervision & Mentorship

Interns participating in the Medical & Public Health Internship receive structured supervision and mentorship from qualified medical professionals at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and LEKMA Hospital in Accra, Ghana.

During the hospital placement, interns observe and learn from doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals as they diagnose and treat patients. Interns gain exposure to clinical procedures, patient care practices, and healthcare delivery within a hospital setting.

Interns also participate in community outreach programs supervised by experienced healthcare practitioners, where they assist with activities such as health education, basic health screenings, and preventive healthcare initiatives.

The Pro-Passion Projects team provides program orientation, regular check-ins, and ongoing support to ensure interns receive structured guidance, feedback, and professional development throughout the internship.

This supervision structure allows interns to gain meaningful insight into medical practice and public health while developing valuable cross-cultural healthcare experience.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the program, interns will:

• Acquire practical skills in clinical and community healthcare
• Gain exposure to preventive medicine and public health interventions
• Develop cross-cultural communication and professional healthcare experience
• Strengthen CV or resume with international healthcare and pro bono experience
• Earn a Certificate & Reference Letter demonstrating participation and skill development

Accommodation and Cultural Experience

Participants stay with carefully selected local host families in Accra, providing an immersive cultural experience.

Accommodation includes:
• Private or shared room
Three daily meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner)
• Cultural activities such as African drumming, dance, cooking classes, and local language lessons
• Orientation and city tours including Cape Coast Castle, National Museum, and Arts Center

Program Fee

The program fee is USD $1,600 for a 4-week internship.

• Host family accommodation in Accra
• Three meals per day
• Airport pickup and arrival support
• Program orientation and cultural introduction
• Coordination of community outreach and hospital experiences
• Local program support throughout the internship

Not Included

Participants are responsible for:
• International flights to Ghana
• Visa and travel insurance
• Personal expenses
• Optional travel or weekend excursions
• Any academic credit fees charged by their university

Eligibility

Applicants should meet one of the following:
• Currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student
• Recent graduate
• Academic background or strong interest in Medicine, Nursing, Public Health, or related fields

Minimum Requirements:
• At least 18 years old
• Valid passport
• Up-to-date vaccinations (Yellow Fever and routine immunizations)
• Commitment to complete the full 4-week internship
