General Engineer (Developmental) – Summer Scholars Internship – Summer 2026

 

The Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board (DNFSB) is seeking juniors in an undergraduate engineering, mathematics, or science degree program for internship positions during the May-August 2026 timeframe.

This position is within the DNFSB, Office of the Technical Director.  As an independent agency in the Executive Branch, the DNFSB oversees nuclear safety across the Department of Energy’s (DOE) nuclear weapons complex. 


Summer scholars collaborate with leading nuclear safety experts to address critical and complex technical challenges that directly impact the safety of both the public and the workforce.

 

Conditions of Employment:

  • US Citizenship is required.
  • Suitable for Federal employment, determined by background investigation.
  • Must pass a drug screening.
  • Direct Deposit of pay is required.
  • Selective Service registration required for male applicants, unless exempt.
  • If requested, must provide an official transcript indicating a 3.4 GPA or higher.

 

Education:

Must have recently graduated or are about to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in engineering, mathematics, or science at an ABET-accredited institution.  An unofficial transcript is required for application.

 

Disciplines Sought:

Engineering:  Civil, Structural, Geotechnical, Fire Protection, Reliability, Systems, Industrial, Mechanical, Nuclear, Electrical, Chemical, and other engineering majors.  

 

Mathematics and Science:  Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and related majors.
