Community Engagement Intern

Title: Community Engagement Intern (Spring 2026)

Time: Minimum of 12 weeks & approximately 15 hrs/week. We are willing to work with students to meet additional duration and hour requirements. 

Compensation: A stipend is provided to interns as a part of the program. 

About Us: Baxter Community Center is a 501(c)(3) organization located in the Baxter neighborhood of Grand Rapids, MI. Baxter supports neighbors by providing youth and childcare programs, healthcare, emergency food and clothing assistance, and additional educational community programming. The Child Development Center (CDC), Wholistic Health Center, and Marketplace are Baxter’s three pillars and the conduits of this work. 

Description: The Community Mobilization Intern will work closely with our Director of Community Engagement to support the planning, organization, and execution of initiatives aimed at educating and mobilizing community members for various programs and projects, including, but not limited to Baxter’s diabetes prevention & reduction programs, educational lunch-and-learn workshops holiday basket programs, and assistance with continuing relationships within the community through outreach and participation in the Baxter United Neighborhood Group (BU) initiatives. This internship provides hands-on experience in community outreach, neighborhood engagement, community health education and grassroots organizing.
 

Responsibilities:

  • Project Support:
    • Assist in the planning and coordination of community mobilization projects, campaigns, and events with Baxter’s community engagement team, with special emphasis on health education programs and BU.
    • Participate in project research, development, implementation, evaluation and logistics.
  • Community Outreach:
    • Engage with community members through various channels, including meetings, workshops, social media, and door-to-door campaigns.
    • Promote Baxter and subsequent groups’ initiatives and encourage community participation.
  • Volunteer Recruitment and Management:
    • Help community engagement team recruit and train volunteers to support community mobilization efforts.
    • Coordinate volunteer activities and provide guidance as needed.
  • Data Collection and Analysis:
    • Collect and analyze data related to community engagement and project impact.
    • Prepare reports and presentations based on data findings.
  • Communication and Advocacy:
    • Assist in developing communication materials, such as flyers, newsletters, and social media content.
    • Advocate for community needs and concerns to relevant stakeholders.
  • Event Planning and Execution:
    • Contribute to the planning and execution of community events, focus groups, workshops, and meetings.
    • Ensure events and programs run smoothly and meet their objectives.
  • Collaboration and Networking:
    • Collaborate with local organizations, community leaders, and government agencies to strengthen community partnerships.
    • Attend relevant meetings and events to expand knowledge and networks in community mobilization.

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a college or university program (or recent graduate) with an interest in community development, public health education, social work or a related field.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Passion for community engagement and grassroots organizing.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in computer applications, including google suites, and social media platforms.
