Position Overview:

Advanced Technologies is currently seeking a Composite Materials Intern to be part of a team assisting multiple nuclear development projects at its Advanced Technologies research and development organization in Lynchburg, VA. The intern will be responsible for developing novel manufacturing techniques of either ceramic/ceramic or ceramic/metal composite materials through one of a few manufacturing technologies including chemical vapor infiltration, polymer infiltration, melt infiltration, or power processing.

 

Location:

The position will be located in Lynchburg, VA at the Advanced Technologies Office.

 

Your Day to Day as a Composite Materials Intern:

  • Take ownership of a composite manufacturing development program.
  • Generate/improve standard operating procedures and perform a safety analysis of the technology being developed.
  • Develop and execute a development plan for the maturation of the selected technology.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be a currently enrolled student pursuing a bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD degree in a technical field of study (e.g., Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineer, Nuclear Engineer, Physics, Chemistry etc.).
  • Must have strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to multi-task.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience/exposure in the processing and microstructure characterization of ceramic, metal, or composite materials.
  • Experience/exposure in chemical vapor processing technologies.
  • Experience/exposure in polymer processing.
  • Experience/exposure to powder processing techniques.
  • Enthusiastic attitude for tackling new challenges and learning new technologies.
