Position Overview:
As a Safety Analysis Intern, you will work with a team of safety analyses engineers to support the documentation and model development of probabilistic risk assessment (PRA).
Location:
- The position will be located in Lynchburg, VA at the Advanced Technologies Office.
Your Day to Day as a Safety Analysis Intern:
- Support the development of probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) documentation and models.
- Develop and document Failure Rate Database using generic industry sources.
- Develop/update fault tree modeling guidelines for consistency in level of detail and modeling conventions used in PRA models.
- Learn and use PHOENIX/CAFTA software to support development of system fault tree models.
- Quantify and review system fault tree models to support evaluations of proposed plant designs to identify design weaknesses and potential improvements.
- Support the performance of safety analysis tasks for terrestrial nuclear power plants, including hazard identification and safety basis event identification.
- Support the performance of Safety and Mission Assurance tasks for space reactors, including hazard analysis, identifications of mitigation actions and verification actions.
- Support preparation of reports for NRC or DOE review and approval.
- Integrate with other engineering groups performing aspects of component, system, fuel, and control system design.
Required Qualifications:
- Must be currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering or physics (Mechanical, Nuclear, or a related discipline).
- Must be able to take coaching and feedback is required.
- Must demonstrate strong technical writing skills.
- Must possess effective communication skills.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with performing fault tree analysis CAFTA, SAPHIRE, PHOENIX, or similar codes.
- Experience in leading technical teams (e.g. class project teams).
- Experience reading system piping & instrumentation diagrams or one-line electrical diagrams.
- Enrolled or completed classes associated with PRA or application of tools is a plus.
