Planning & Sustainability Intern (PT)

SUMMARY
The City of Birmingham (EOE) is accepting resumes for an Urban Planning & Sustainability Intern. Under the general supervision of the Planning Director, the Urban Planning & Sustainability Intern will assist in a variety of functions within the department. Assignments may include research, site plan reviews, report writing, zoning compliance requests, and assisting City Planners in completing other urban planning and/or sustainability related projects.

OBJECTIVES

  • To prepare the student for entry into the Urban Planning Profession with an emphasis on sustainability, and a diverse work experience in a professional environment.
  • To add value to the operations of the City of Birmingham Planning Division by applying knowledge gained by the student in coursework studies.

FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Assists in the implementation of the Birmingham Green: Healthy Climate Plan and the Birmingham Plan 2040.
2. Reviews development proposals for compliance with City Code and consistency with master plans, land use and overall City design objectives. Coordinates staff reviews and recommendations.
3. Prepares a variety of graphics, maps, and reports.
4. Performs research and studies on land use, population, economic development, and development trends and histories. Prepares a variety of written reports for the City Manager, Planning Director and City Commissions and Boards.
5. Stays informed on current regional and state trends, programs, and legislation relating to planning, land use, and zoning issues and assesses impact on the City.
6. Additional related responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
Junior, Senior, or Graduate level students in Urban Planning, Sustainability or related programs, are encouraged to apply. Candidates must have excellent writing, interpersonal, communication, and analytical skills. Experience with Microsoft Office and other common software applications required.

HOURS & SALARY

  • Seasonal position
  • Flexible schedule of up to 28 hours per week
  • $16 per hour to start
