Brooks Internship for the Digitization of Benjamin Henry Latrobe Works

The Maryland Center for History and Culture (MCHC) is offering paid internship focused on the digitization of sketchbooks of Benjamin Henry Latrobe, 1764-1820. The sketchbooks include watercolor drawings and written observations from Latrobe’s travels through the early American territories. This is an opportunity for a student or recent graduate to gain hands-on technical experience in object handling, digital imaging, technical writing, inclusive language, and digital accessibility. The intern will work under the direction of the Director of Digital Experience and have opportunities to intersect with Special Collections Archivists, Education and Museum staff throughout their work.

 

This internship is generously supported by the Andy and Sana Brooks Family Fund.

Responsibilities:

  • Scan artwork and document observational data;
  • Organize technical metadata according to established guidelines;
  • Transcribe and research material content to formulate object descriptions and apply controlled vocabularies according to MCHC’s style and technical guidelines.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in, or recent graduate of a museum studies, information studies or history program. Preference will be given to candidates with completed coursework related to museum studies, library science, archives, information science, public history, or curatorial studies;
  • Effective communicator;
  • Ability to work independently;
  • Organized and detail oriented; and interpersonal skills;
  • Proficient with technology and able to learn new systems and software;
  • Must be able to commit to 12 hours per week onsite at MCHC.

About the Position:

  • $3000 stipend for 240 hours of work, typically performed 12 hours per week for 20 weeks. 
  • Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis, prioritizing a mid-October start date;
  • The selected candidate must undergo a background check prior to beginning the internship; 
  • Complimentary MCHC membership, including free library and museum admission;
  • Free onsite parking
