What you’ll do: The Process Engineering Intern assists process engineers in the creation and implementation of production processes for new products. This position involves extensive manufacturing involvement, handling of parts and tooling, documentation and technical writing under observation of process engineers. This is a hands-on position that requires interaction with Engineering, Operations, and plant associates.
Duties / Responsibilities of this position:
- Assists Process and Tooling Engineers in documenting and maintaining correct cycle time for processes. Works with Industrial Engineer to maintain routings and capacity information current to processes.
- Records and maintains mold and process setup sheets, water diagrams, and schematics.
- Improves and documents processes on existing molds, using systematic molding techniques and DOE. Works independently commensurate with learned knowledge of subject.
- Writes process paperwork and work instructions for review by engineering.
- Observes process trials and assists as necessary. Packs and moves parts and scrap as needed
- Assists Process Engineering and Manufacturing with cycle and efficiency improvement efforts.
- Monitors production processes, sorts data, and prepares summaries for process engineering.
- Audits production processes for adherence to established setup
- Assembles necessary materials for trial runs. Produces parts, builds prototypes, and assembles equipment as needed
- Reviews and summarizes weekly PRS data and identifies areas for improvement. Contributes to the weekly Manufacturing meeting.
- Runs and analyzes results of DOE (design of experiments)
Expectations / Key Performance Indicators:
- Exposure to the manufacturing environment and day-to-day operations - L&L Products manufactures structural injection molded parts to most OEM automakers.
- Hands on experience with the injection molding process including the following:
- Mold changes/setup
- Startup and shutdown of molding machines
- Processing/monitoring process parameters
- Identifying and correcting part defects (Flash, shorts, etc.)
- Material Handling
- Safety practices
- Follow the design and development of a part. Opportunity to spend time with different teams at L&L responsible for:
- Initial design and feasibility
- Mold Flow
- Tool design and build
- Mold Trial (Process Development)
- Product Launch
- Intern will report directly to the process engineering team. They will be asked to support projects that the team has open.
- Each intern will work towards completing a final project. Project will be flexible and ultimately will be determined based upon background and interests of employee.
Job Requirements:
Education/Experience/Training:
- High School Diploma
- Candidate will be enrolled in an Engineering program (BS Engineering or Technology program)
Competencies:
- Familiar with spreadsheets i.e., Excel, Smartsheet
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to interface with multiple disciplines (R&D, Machine Repair, Engineering)
- Hands-on aptitude; ability to work safely in manufacturing environment
Physical Demands Analysis:
- Position may require standing to perform work for several hours at a time
- Occasional listing 35lb or less
