Pay rate: $18.00/hr
Founded in 1921, the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) is a leading nonprofit membership organization, research center, and publisher, with headquarters in New York, an office in Washington, DC, and programs nationwide. It is dedicated to increasing America’s understanding of the world and contributing ideas to U.S.
foreign policy. CFR’s 5,000+ members are leaders in international affairs and foreign policy. CFR also publishes Foreign Affairs, the preeminent magazine on global issues, and provides up-to-date information about the world and U.S. foreign policy on its award-winning website, CFR.org.
CFR’s Blavatnik and Robina Franklin Williams internships give selected interns the opportunity to receive training in the field of foreign policy, as well as skills training in areas such as writing, research, and program planning and much more.
As a nonpartisan organization dedicated to informing and educating a wide range of audiences about global issues and foreign policy choices, CFR recognizes the importance of continually engaging the next generation of digital talent. The intern's fresh perspective will be invaluable as we navigate the ever-changing multimedia landscape, helping us to continually mature the way we visually communicate complex issues.
The major responsibilities of this position will include (but are not limited to):
• Create compelling visual representations of complex data sets to aid in the understanding of key
foreign policy issues
• Collect and analyze data using tools like Excel or R/Python
• Design data visualizations using tools like Adobe Illustrator, Figma, and Datawrapper
• Assist with web development to create interactive graphics
• Develop engaging visual content for CFR’s social media channels, video, and email
Qualifications:
• Undergraduate or graduate student who has completed coursework or has experience in visual communication design, data visualization, data journalism, or a related field
• All applicants should have completed the equivalent of four semesters of college coursework (not including AP classes in high school) by the time they begin an internship)
• Experience with Adobe Creative Suite and/or Figma
• Experience with Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets
• Experience with Datawrapper, Adobe Ilustrator, Python/R, and JavaScript (D3.js, ObservableHQ) is preferred but not required
• Previous experience working in a newsroom is preferred
• Strong attention to detail and resourcefulness
