About the Program

Bronson’s Nurse Extern Program offers nursing students within one year of graduation the opportunity to work alongside experienced Registered Nurses (RNs) while continuing their education. This paid, year-round role provides valuable exposure to clinical environments and helps prepare you for a seamless transition into professional practice.

Externs are matched to available units based on interest, availability, and compatibility. While preferences are considered, all placements offer meaningful learning experiences that will strengthen your nursing skills and confidence.

  • Ortho Surgical Unit (OSU)
  • General Surgical Unit (GSU)
  • Neuro Vascular Unit (NVU)
  • General Medical Unit (GMU)
  • Adult Medical Unit (AMU)
  • Extended Medical Care Unit (EMCU)

Bronson Battle Creek Hospital

  • Bed U Rotation (Med/Surg Rotation)

Bronson LakeView Hospital (Paw Paw)

  • General Care Unit (GCU)
  • Emergency Department (ED)

Bronson South Haven Hospital

  • General Care Unit (GCU)

Program Details

  • Start Date: December 15, 2025
  • Status: PRN, paid position (not benefits-eligible)
  • Schedule: 12-hour variable shifts (7a–7p or 7p–7a)
  • Minimum Commitment: 4 shifts per month (2 weekend shifts required)
  • Orientation: Two-week, full-time day shift orientation to prepare for success

Role Summary

Under the supervision of an RN and in alignment with Bronson policies, procedures, and the Nurse Practice Act, the Nurse Extern provides safe, high-quality patient care. Externs assist in implementing care plans, monitoring patients, and developing clinical skills while learning to prioritize, delegate, and communicate effectively in a hospital setting.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Collaborating with RNs and care teams to deliver patient-centered care
  • Monitoring vital signs, documenting patient conditions, and reporting changes
  • Assisting with procedures, treatments, and patient education
  • Supporting discharge planning and daily care activities
  • Maintaining patient safety and comfort at all times

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program
  • Within one year of graduation (expected graduation Spring or Winter 2026)
  • High school diploma or GED required

BLS Certification required

  • Completion of a pharmacology course or satisfactory pharmacology test performance
  • Ability to read, interpret, and analyze data from clinical systems and equipment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Physical Requirements

This position requires frequent standing and walking, regular lifting of up to 20 lbs, and assisting with heavier tasks such as patient transfers. The role may involve extended computer use and varied clinical activities that require attention to detail and safe body mechanics.
