AmeriCorps Tutor for Incarcerated Youth
ABOUT JUMP START
Jump Start is a volunteer-based program that focuses on providing academic tutoring to incarcerated youth. The program was founded in 1995 by the Literacy Volunteers of Illinois (LVI) and operates through the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice. LVI-AmeriCorps members in the Jump Start program work alongside community volunteers to provide tutoring, and also in concert with LVI to assist in necessary data collection and reporting so that the program continues to be available to the students we serve.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
As an LVI-AmeriCorps member in Jump Start, you will serve as a one-to-one and small group tutor, become involved with volunteer recruitment and retention activities, and assist in obtaining resources that will benefit the students we serve.
- Plan tutoring sessions and provide one-to-one tutoring to referred youth;
- Conduct basic skills and literacy assessments of those referred;
- Encourage and support those tutored by helping them develop confidence and a positive attitude about learning;
- Select materials and approaches that are suitable for the student’s ability and needs;
- Track student’s progress through regular assessments and submit reports;
- Maintain records of tutoring sessions, including materials used, lessons reviewed, progress made;
- Participate in initial and in-service tutor and facilities training, as requested or required;
- May provide supervision and/or support to other tutors;
- May assist with data collection and/or grant research or writing;
LOCATION AND HOURS
- Phoenix Emerging Adult Career & Education (PEACE) Center at IYC-St. Charles, 3825 Campton Hills Rd., St. Charles, IL 60175
- School Hours: Mondays-Fridays: 8:00 am – 3:00 pm
- Evening Tutoring – 1 day per week 5:30 - 7:30
QUALIFICATIONS
Good oral, written and interpersonal communication skills and computer proficiency
Volunteer and/or tutoring experience, a plus.
3rd or 4th year college student

Note: The Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice requires all those serving in their system to go through a background check, fingerprinting, TB test, and an observed drug screening.
