Museum Archivist and Collection Management- Intern

Approximate Start/Duration and Any Standard Hours

  • Jan 2026-June 2026 (will consider extending through summer 2026 as well)
  • Available to work during museum open hours (Thu/Fri/Sat 10-6, Sun 12-5).   Not all those hours but PTM would like to schedule you 8-12 hrs per week during those open times (somewhat flexible with specifics)
  • Selected assignment work can be conducted remotely and/or involve research for artifacts at other locations.

 

Role Description:

  • PTM is beginning usage of a more substantial collection management and museum records system – “PastPerfect” 
  • This individual responsible to populate records in PastPerfect of collection artifacts received, museum members, museum patrons
  • This will involve photographing, scanning, and cataloging, artifacts as well as building PTM’s internal filing/storage system for such artifacts (physical items as well as photographs and historical paper records)
  • Assignment may involve assembling content of digital exhibit photographic/video for use in PTM’s “BrightSign” driven exhibits.
  • Will expose this individual to many other tasks in the business of a non-profit museum – everything from back up operation of the front entry desk to exhibit maintenance to social media.
  • As associate grows in this role, will ask their involvement in identification of content/information that should be prioritized for exhibit or development of “stories” that might be surfaced in PTM social media

 

Candidate Qualifications:

  • Facility with, or quick leaner of cloud-based software systems and data upload 
  • Comfortable with very independent work.   Facility with video format conversion tools desired.   Library science interest or experience would be ideal but not required
  • Likely want to work off own personal laptop.   Need transportation to physically work at museum or other research location.
  • Sophomore or above preferred.  Interest in automotive and community history preferred
  • Michigan Works funding of this opportunity may require additional eligibility or documentation requirements
