SUMMARY: The Summer Intern at Great Lakes Potato Chip Co., LLC focuses on one department (Warehouse, Production, or Human Resources) to spend the bulk of their 12 weeks learning about the role of the department and its leader. Interns will spend time with each leader and have an opportunity to carry out various duties of the leader in their preferred department.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Will include but are not limited to the following:
Warehouse
- Feed potatoes to the potato hopper during production hours.
• Keep up boxes and pallets to support production.
• Receive and store appropriately completed pallets from the production room.
• Build purchase orders and load trucks.
• Maintain warehouses and warehouse equipment.
• Log warehouse and PO activity.
• Learn MISys program and assist as needed
Production
Bagger
• Confirm good seal on all heat seals per bag
• Build boxes according to production list.
• Label completed cases and place completed pallet behind older product.
• Alert supervisor to any issues associated with metal detector or bagging machinery.
• Communicate professionally with warehouse to keep cardboard par levels in production room and to move finished pallets to warehouse.
• During downtimes and at end of shift perform required cleaning procedures.
• Ensure you have necessary supplies.
Inspector (Sorter):
• Remove any undesirable product from inspection table (oil filled chips, burnt chips, raw chips, potato chunks and doubles.
• Watch for any foreign objects that may have fallen in chip totes. (Critical!)
• Inspect at a comfortable rate. This means if the chips are moving too fast for you to do an adequate job of inspecting, slow it down or ask supervisor for help.
• Make sure the seasoner is not overfilling the hopper (two totes at a time max).
Tote Runner:
• Maintain clean work environment.
• Do not touch the bottom of bins when filling hopper with chips.
• Place product in hopper. No more than two bins at a time.
• Do not overload hoppers to prevent spillage of chips.
• Assure that proper chip flavor is being placed in hopper with proper flavor running on bagger.
• Communicate with supervisor and seasoners to maintain priorities of the production list and support them with proper seasonings when needed.
Quality Specialist:
- Keep records of quality tests completed.
- Provide updated testing requirements and procedures as defined by the customer/government regulators.
- Prioritize customer specifications and ensure all products meet customer specification requirements.
- Adhere to all industry quality and safety standards.
- Assist management team in internal audits, GMP walkthroughs and plant observations.
- Conduct basic biological and laboratory testing of finished product.
- Adhere to OSHA policies and company safety procedures and requirements.
- Submit documentation for safety hazards to a supervisor when identified.
- Avoid rushing, awkward positions, and lifting heavy objects alone.
- Understanding of HACCP.
- Follow all GMPs.
- Monitor product surfaces and work area for any source of cross contamination.
- Report any foreign material or food safety risk to a supervisor immediately.
- Lead by example by demonstrating what is expected of the food safety culture of Great Lakes Potato Chip Co.
Mysis Specialist:
- Feed labels into the printer as needed
- Do daily cycle counts of finished goods and raw material as assigned
- Sign out spices, seasoning, and film from warehouse into production
- Enter batch code from packaging into Mysis system
- Cross train in Quality Assurance
- Supply production with empty skids and cardboard boxes throughout the day as needed
- Other duties as assigned
Human Resources
- Maintain employee files
- Assist with recruiting, interviewing, hiring, onboarding, and off-boarding employees
- Assist with administering leaves, benefits, and Worker’s Compensation/accident reporting
- Assist with employee engagement activities such as surveys and events
Administration
- Learn about each leadership role and assist as needed
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Current college student studying Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business, Management, Entrepreneurship, Human Resources or a related field
- Physical stamina to perform tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work in a team-oriented environment and maintain effective communication.
- Ability to operate machinery and equipment with mechanical knowledge (preferred)
- Experience with packaging and sanitizing equipment (preferred)
EDUCATION:
- High school diploma or GED
- Some college
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
• Must be able to lift at least 40 pounds.
• Must be able to wear a mask when working with strong seasonings.
• Must be able to work in a hot environment.
• Must be able to work in a loud environment with the aid of ear protection.
