Youth Engagement Intern

POSITION RESPONSIBILITES

Working directly with the children and young people or ARG supporting them in all aspects of their daily activities and routines.

Utilizing and sharing your skills to ensure that the time you offer the program is quality time

Supporting the staff in their role of providing quality care for the children in our service

Acting as a role model to the children, supporting them in all areas of their learning and development.

To work as part of the summer project team with staff, volunteers, students and managers.

To learn about youth work and good youth work practices with the help and support of the team through daily meetings with the team

Using policies and procedures in working with the children. Youth Leaders will get to know all of the centers policies and procedures over the first few months of work with the help and support of staff.

 

Internship Responsibilities:

  • Engage positively in weekly activities and workshops
  • Support the summer project team to plan and prepare activities each week
  • Be a role model for the young people leading by example
  • Support staff with drop off and pick up including taking attendance
  • Supervise groups together with other Youth Team members
  • Promote positive behavior with young people
  • Attend trips and holiday supports if requested/available
  • Attend and contribute to debriefings after weekly groups offering/receiving ongoing feedback and support
  • Support summer project Coordinator with programme admin
  • Work as part of a team to build and maintain a supportive environment
  • Implement restorative practice as a procedure for conflict resolution within the group
  • Students/Interns/Volunteers with talents, skills and qualifications in specific activities are encouraged to plan and implement workshops if comfortable doing so, with the support and guidance of the coordinator
  • Attend team meetings and training days if/when applicable
  • Identify areas requiring support and training
  • Follow the policies and procedures which can be found in the induction pack or in the office
  • Inform the coordinator if they cannot attend the group or if they are delayed
  • Support other Ozanam House teams and general operations as agreed with the coordinator

 

During the academic year internships must be 12+ weeks

During the summer internships can be 8-12 weeks

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:
A community centre in the north inner city and operated by the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, one of the largest charitable and voluntary organisations in the world.  The centre offers various educational (adult and youth), community, youth and childcare programs that are aimed at addressing social exclusion as well as the many needs of the local community in Dublin's north inner city. The centre now offers 600 programme places to 500 people per week where our youngest member is 2 and our eldest is 96. We also engage 60 active volunteers who share their time and skills each week for the benefit of others.  One of our biggest and most successful programs is our summer projects where we engage up to 280 children and young people in an action-packed activities program throughout the months of June, July and August each year.

ADDITIONAL BENEFITS:
On-site Supervision and Support
Our internships include 24/7 on-site staff to support students working and living abroad. All students will also report to a supervisor at their internship site. Supervisors provide and oversee daily tasks, introduce the intern to team members, and mentor the intern in organizational agility, skill acquisition, and career readiness. Interns complete a midpoint and final evaluation, and supervisors complete a final evaluation of their interns. All work responsibilities and projects are approved in advance. 

Academic Credit
Students on an internship have the opportunity to enroll in their home university for credit, or enroll in a course through API to transfer back to their university for credit. Email support-internships@apiexperience.com for more information and a syllabus.

Housing and excursions are included in your internship and will be selectable during the application process.
