JOB SUMMARY
Resident Assistants (RAs) live in the residence halls and student apartments, where they advise and mentor students living on their assigned floor or building and actively encourage a positive residential environment. They offer students advice and guidance in academic, social, and financial matters and handle several administrative duties. Additionally, RAs regularly respond to situations/crises within their residential community, including, but not limited to: mental health concerns, facilities issues, and interpersonal conflict. RAs also help residents become acquainted with the university and residential community, and are responsible for enforcing University & University Housing policies and procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- Must have sophomore, junior, or senior class standing or be enrolled as a graduate student at Oakland University by time of employment
- Current cumulative and semester GPA must be 2.75 or higher
- Must not be found responsible of severe conduct infractions
- RAs are expected to live on-campus in their assigned RA room throughout the duration of their employment
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
The Resident Assistant (RA) is a student who is hired to mentor their assigned residents, as well as support all residents in their community on academic, personal, social, and financial matters. In addition, they perform administrative duties in connection with the general management of their community. A major portion of the RA’s job will be to actively influence the environment and encourage students to participate in programs and activities through leadership and availability. This job is contracted for the full academic year, including the fall and winter semesters. RAs are expected to move out at the end of their contracted period of employment.
- Become acquainted with and build rapport with all of their assigned residents.
- Foster a community that is supportive of all residents by promoting acceptance and understanding of diverse backgrounds.
- Complete one community service desk shift per week, which requires knowledge of all processes and procedures related to keys, mail, packages, and equipment.
- Help residents adapt to living on campus as changes occur.
- Act as a positive role model for residents.
- Respond to crisis situations at any time of the day and night.
- Refer residents to appropriate campus and community resources.
- Plan and implement programs to foster community and to educate residents on issues pertinent to their development.
- Participate in an on-call duty rotation, including some regularly scheduled weeknights and weekends.
- Being on-call requires RAs to stay within their assigned residential community, complete community walk throughs with a duty partner, and respond to a variety of types of residential calls and concerns
- Complete all assigned administrative work, including, but not limited to, incident reports, duty logs, and program forms.
- Participate in the opening and closing of the residence halls during all recess periods.
- Support and enforce all Oakland University and University Housing policies and the Student Code of Conduct.
- Participate in an ancillary assignment.
- Serve as a mandated reporter for Title IX and the Clery Act. As a student employee of University Housing, you would be responsible for reporting crimes on campus. Information on the Clery Act and Title IX can be found in detail here.
- Abide by FERPA, ensuring that the privacy of students is maintained at all times.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
DEPARTMENT CONDITIONS
- Act in accordance with all University Housing staff policies which are shared during staff training
- Act in accordance with all University Housing policies in the Housing Handbook
- Act in accordance with the Clery Act as a mandated reporter and carry out responsibilities in reporting a crime on campus as a University Housing staff member.
- Must be free of student conduct sanctions and uphold the University’s Student Code of Conduct, the Housing Handbook, and all of University Housing’s staff policies at the time of application and throughout employment.
- Maintain a minimum of a 2.75 cumulative and semester GPA. If the staff member’s GPA falls below the requirement, that staff member may be placed on academic notice or be subject to termination.
- Must be enrolled full-time, at least 12 credit hours per semester, at Oakland University unless otherwise approved by the supervisor.
POSITION SPECIFIC CONDITIONS
- Attend all meetings and training sessions, including training beginning in mid-August 2026 before the fall semester, in-service training sessions during the fall and winter semesters, and training before the start of the winter semester. Failure to attend these training sessions can lead to your offer for the position being rescinded, or termination from the RA position.
- Act in accordance with the Clery Act and carry out responsibilities in reporting a crime on campus as a University Housing staff member.
- Act in accordance with all Mandated Reporter expectations for situations related to Title IX and student mental health.
- Due to the nature of the position and its specific requirements, you cannot retain this position while student teaching or while completing any internship or form of experiential education above 15 hours per week.
- Considering the formal and informal demands of the position, you are limited to a cumulative 15 hours of other employment, extracurricular activities (i.e., volunteering, student organizations or clubs, sports, etc.), or responsibilities outside of this position. You must inform the Assistant Director for Residence Life and your direct supervisor of these activities so that they can approve them.
If one or more of these conditions are violated, you will be provided a timely and orderly process for the investigation and adjudication of the alleged violations. If you are determined to be responsible for the alleged violations, you will be subject to disciplinary action. The RA Accountability/Discipline Procedures are provided in the student staff training manual, and are reviewed during the first mandatory training period.

COMPENSATION
- Single room and board for the academic year
- Stipend valued at approximately $1,632
