Co-Op IT/AI Innovation Tech/ Super Geek Track

Job Title

IT + AI Innovation Tech, Cloud Security and Automation, Super Geek Track

Job Description

Do you have more devices than roommates, a half wired home lab, and a Raspberry Pi or two doing “important experiments” in the corner? Maybe you have wired apps together with Zapier, Make.com, n8n or Power Automate just to see what you could automate.

SMART IT Services is looking for a few IT and AI super nerds to join our team in Utica, Michigan as paid interns. We are a cloud, networking, security and AI workflows company that helps businesses, especially insurance agencies, modernize their tech and ship real AI solutions.

This is not a reset passwords all day internship. You start with core tasks so you can learn the environment, then, if you show skill and initiative, you get pulled into real client work, security tools and AI automation projects. The role is built to be part time and flexible around school, and if the fit is right, it can turn into a full time role after graduation.

Think of it as turning your side projects and home lab into a job.

What you will do

You will get training, then help with things like

  • Monitoring and testing server and data backups so companies do not lose critical data
  • Reviewing and digging into firewall alerts, low disk space and performance issues
  • Doing basic user administration in Microsoft Windows networks and Microsoft 365
  • Building, repairing and prepping PCs, laptops and AI edge servers, including
    • setting up hardware for AI workloads
    • installing and testing open source AI models
    • helping build small AI solutions that run at the edge or in the cloud
  • Helping with cloud and network documentation, asset inventory and cleanup
  • Assisting with internal AI workflow and automation projects, such as
    • wiring systems together using Zapier, Make.com, n8n or Microsoft Power Automate
    • testing prompts and workflows for AI powered copilots and chat agents
    • mapping and documenting business processes so they can be automated
  • General office and lab tasks including shipping, receiving and keeping the shop organized

As you level up, you may be invited to sit in on or help with

  • Network and security assessments
  • Cloud migrations and tenant cleanup projects
  • Designing and testing AI automations for real clients using both open source models and commercial AI platforms
  • Working with voice over IP phone systems and learning what you need for VoIP certifications
  • Working with IT management and monitoring platforms and other advanced tools used by pro IT shops

This is hands on, real world IT, security and AI work, not just labs and theory.

Who we are looking for

This role is a strong match if you

  • Are currently studying IT, networking, cybersecurity, computer science or a related field
  • Already tinker with tech for fun, for example
    • home lab, virtual machines, Docker, homelab networking
    • Raspberry Pi or other single board computer projects
    • running local or open source AI models, playing with LLMs
  • Have any experience or serious interest in automation tools like
    • Zapier, Make.com, n8n, Microsoft Power Automate or similar low code tools
  • Are comfortable with Windows, basic networking concepts and Microsoft 365
  • Are organized, write clear notes and follow through without needing constant reminders
  • Actually enjoy troubleshooting, chasing down weird issues and fixing them
  • Can talk to non technical people in normal human language

If you have personal projects, GitHub repos, screenshots or anything you can show us, that scores big points. School work is great, but we really like to see what you build when nobody is grading you.

What you get

  • Paid internship
  • Flexible hours around your class schedule, ideally about 20 hours per week onsite in Utica
  • Direct mentoring from senior engineers who have been doing this for decades
  • Real world experience with
    • networks and security tools
    • AI edge servers and open source models
    • automation platforms like Zapier, Make.com, n8n and Power Automate
    • VoIP systems and IT management tools

Certification support and raises

  • We pay for approved certification exams such as CompTIA A plus, Network plus, Security plus, and others
  • Other relevant certifications may be supported as well
  • You get guaranteed pay bumps tied to earning certain certifications

Path to a full time role

High performers will have a clear path to move into a full time position, which includes

  • paid sick time
  • paid holidays
  • paid vacation

If you want a career in IT and AI, this is a way to build real skills, real experience and a resume that actually shows what you can do, not just what classes you took.
