Capuchin Soup Kitchen
The Capuchin Soup Kitchen, a ministry of the Province of St. Joseph of the Capuchin Order located in Detroit, MI, serves individuals experiencing poverty and hunger by providing nutritious meals and supportive services. Our many programs include two meal sites (Conner and Meldrum), a Services Center, Earthworks Urban Farm, the Rosa Parks Children’s and Youth Program, On the Rise Bakery and Café, and Jefferson House—a residential treatment program for men recovering from substance use disorders.
Position Overview
We are seeking a Part-Time Academic Assistant at the Rosa Parks Children and Youth Program, a ministry of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen in Detroit, Michigan. The Academic Assistant will support participants in their education goals by tutoring and assisting the Academic Specialist with activities related to the program. This part-time position may also be asked to help with summer camps, field trips and other special activities.
Position Hours
- Monday – Friday
- 3:00PM – 6:00PM
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Demonstrate, exemplify and support the Capuchin Charism and Provincial Mission, Vision and Values throughout all professional responsibilities and activities.
- Assist Academic Specialist in developing lesson plans, goals and objectives for participants.
- Assist with office tasks as needed.
- Assist participants in developing their reading and comprehension skills.
- Work with participants to ensure homework and projects are completed.
- Be available to assist in all CSK events and programs.
- Comply with Province and CSK policies, procedures, guidelines and standards.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience in classroom setting, tutoring or mentoring youth.
- Must complete Archdiocese of Detroit’s “Protecting God’s Children” training or provide evidence (e.g., certificate) of prior completion before hire.
- Effective communication, problem solving, interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and travel locally.
- Effective Microsoft Office skills.
- Ability to lift and move up to 30 pounds.
- Ability to be welcoming and professional.
- Ability to relate effectively to youth of all ages in a central city environment.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including late afternoons/early evenings and some Saturdays.
- Knowledge of social and economic variables that may affect youth.
