Summer Camp Leadership Intern-White Clay Creek State Park

As a member of the Summer Camp/ Environmental Education Team, candidates will work with school-aged, and at some sites pre-school aged, children in summer camps, outdoor environmental education programs, and specialty/recreational programs. This is a leadership development position and candidates are expected to grow and take on leadership roles. 

Interns will also participate in intern-wide professional development activities and experiential learning opportunities that may require them to be off-site or away from their placement. Each intern will complete a personalized “demonstration of learning” project. At the conclusion of the internship, all interns will present their projects during a poster session for peers and Delaware State Parks staff.

Job Duties:

  • Assists in the delivery of interpretive programs to participants of all ages in a variety of contexts.
  • May lead educational and recreational hikes, canoe and kayak trips plus excursion off-site camp programs.
  • Design summer camp games and crafts that are age-appropriate
  • May assist with planning and instruction of the CIT (Counselor-in-Training) Orientation (only offered at certain sites)
  • Ensure a fun, educational, and safe environment for children.
  • May assist with First-Aid duties.
  • May lead daily summer camper activities, such as teaching, crafts, games, etc.
  • Provides general customer service and park information to visitors.
  • May include live animal care and handling.
  • Assist with camp building and trail maintenance as it relates to summer camp and programs
  • Provide direction and answer questions from program participants
  • Help gather materials and assist in set up and clean-up for assigned program.
  • Report suggestions and observations.
  • May assist in the operation of the Nature Center; tours/ explanation of exhibits, cleanliness, answering phones, answering questions, restocking information brochures and guides, and providing direction.
  • Must be able to demonstrate responsibility, dependability, and good communication skills.
  • Maintain a positive attitude.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • 37.5 hours per week Monday through Friday throughout the camp season.
    • some work on weekends, evenings, and holidays may be scheduled.
