2026 Sustainability Intern
WHO WE ARE
As a Sustainability intern for the Engineering and Construction department in the Metro Transit division, you will have the opportunity to make an impact with high quality resume worthy achievements. Within Engineering and Construction, the need to advance sustainability has never been higher; we are integral to developing and implementing a Transit Sustainability Plan, implementing the Council's Climate Action Work Plan, tracking and analyzing energy usage, and completing energy and emissions reduction projects, while simultaneously carrying out natural systems work that will be noted as strategies and actions with the sustainability plan. In this position you will have exposure to wide ranging Transit and Council decision making processes and decision makers. Additionally, you will compose high level analysis related to emissions and the associated reduction strategies. Lastly, you will forward inclusive engagement work by hearing, sharing, and adapting our work plans to meet the needs of the communities impacted.

- Hours: Full-time summer and Part-time during school year

- Location: Minneapolis
NOTE: This position is eligible for a hybrid (both remote and onsite) telework arrangement.
What does an internship with the Metropolitan Council entail?
Our internships are designed to provide students meaningful work, be an introduction to public service and a chance to discover the Metropolitan Council.
Who is the Metropolitan Council?
The Metropolitan Councils made up of several operating divisions that service the Twin Cities Metropolitan area in a number of ways.
- Metro Transit provides bus and light rail public transportation for the greater metropolitan area
- Metropolitan Council Environmental Services (MCES) manages wastewater treatment plants and the regional wastewater collection system for the seven-county metropolitan region
- Community Development is responsible for helping the Council shape its regional growth plan and Metro HRA provides affordable housing programs in the region
- Metropolitan Transportation Services (MTS) is responsible for the transportation planning functions as the Twin Cities metropolitan planning organization (MPO) for transportation
- Regional Administration provides support services (Finance, Payroll, HR, etc.) for the Council
What you would do in this job
- Task/Project Management of Sustainable or Energy related projects and initiatives. Outreach and engagement; communication of the progress and purpose of the program, both internally and externally.
- Data gathering and analysis that can be used to highlight the progress being made, and/or drive internal decision making.
- Research and review of practices focused on environmental sustainability and climate action.
What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)
- Must be enrolled in a degree seeking program (Associate's, Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD.) OR be a recent graduate (within 12 months from posting date) from a degree program.
- Candidate's residence must be in Minnesota or Wisconsin during the internship.
- An UNOFFICIAL transcript is required to be attached to application.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Previous internship or work experience, preferably with documented work in sustainability.
- Interest and/or previous experience working with waste and recycling.
- Notebook, Teams, and Geographic Information Systems experience.
- Experience with Microsoft Office, Intermediate Skills in Word & Excel.
- A valid MN/WI driver’s license is preferred due to the nature of the position.
DEGREE PROGRAM/AREA OF STUDY PREFERRED
- Engineering, Environmental Science, Environmental Policy, Sustainability Studies, Ecology, Natural Resource Management, Physics, Architecture, Urban Planning, or a related field

If you are new to the Metropolitan Council, you must pass a drug test (safety sensitive positions only), and a background check which verifies education, employment, and criminal history.
