2026 Software Engineer Internship
Summary
The Corning Museum of Glass is the international leader in the pursuit and dissemination of knowledge about art, history, science, and technology of glass and glassmaking.
The museum has an exciting opportunity for an intern to participate in a credit-based internship with our Information Technology Team that centers around software development.
The preferred candidate will be trained to assist with software development tasks, including planning and contributing to ongoing software projects, utilizing source control, integrating
software projects into an automated CI/CD pipeline, debugging and troubleshooting code, and attending design and project management meetings. Additionally, the intern will have
the opportunity to assist the full-time IT staff with other special projects as time permits. This internship is an opportunity for a student seeking an IT degree to greatly broaden their
knowledge of IT processes at a large-scale non-profit organization.
Responsibilities
Development
- Assist in developing and debugging software applications under the guidance of developers in the Information Technology department.
- Participate in software design discussions and contribute ideas to enhance product functionality.
- Conduct research on emerging technologies and frameworks to support ongoing projects.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop, test, and deploy software solutions in alignment with project goals and timelines.
Project Management
- Attend regular developer planning and retrospective meetings.
- Create and maintain documentation for active project work.
- Create and design technical tasks based on business requirements.
Research, Use Cases
- Research and provide 2-3 use cases of Microsoft Graph endpoint access to assist in integration and automation techniques.
Security, structure, source code management
- Effectively manage source control repositories and the workflow of GitHub to manage version, source code supporting notes, and quality control methods for unit testing
General
- Supports and amplifies the Museum’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access.
- Work with IT and business stakeholders to help gather and document requirements as needed.
Learning/Training Opportunities
- Learn about our organizational communication and culture by attending One for All (all-staff), department, and software development team meetings.
- Improve career readiness through participation in learning opportunities provided by the Museum. These include access to Technology, Safety, Information Security, and Institutional Wellness training.
- Gain experience working in an enterprise software development environment with mentorship from experienced professionals in the field.
- Gain experience communicating through presentations/public speaking.
- Gain experience working in a modern DevOps environment utilizing GitHub and GitHub Actions.
- Learn about project management and prioritization.
- Through practice, hands-on training, and working with current professionals in the field, the intern will become more knowledgeable about:
- Modern software development lifecycle practices
- Software design
- Modern project management practices and tools
- Debugging and troubleshooting issues in internally developed software.
Qualifications
- Respect and exemplify the values of the Corning Museum of Glass in all interactions with colleagues, staff, volunteers and the public.
- Ability to represent the Museum in a professional manner.
- Adhere to all prescribed organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
- University or college student, preferably working for a degree in IT or software development, with some experience in a customer service-related field
- Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing.
- Willing to work with a diversified user group
