Position Title: Standardized Patient (SP)
Standardized Patients (SPs) are trained individuals who portray patients, family members, or caregivers in a consistent, believable, and repeatable manner for the purpose of teaching and evaluating health-care learners. SPs assist in developing learners’ communication, assessment, clinical reasoning, and interpersonal skills by participating in structured clinical encounters in a simulated environment. This is for an off-site location at the Oakland West Center (OC) 1500 University Dr, Auburn Hills, MI 48326.
Essential Responsibilities
- Portray a patient case exactly as trained, including medical history, symptoms, emotions, behaviors, and affect.
- Participate in learner encounters including interviews, health histories, focused and/or full physical assessments depending on scenario design.
- Accurately recall and document details of the encounter for student feedback or evaluation forms.
- Provide constructive, behavior-based feedback to learners as trained.
- Follow scenario scripts and maintain consistency across repeated sessions so all learners encounter the same case conditions.
- Wear appropriate attire or moulage based on scenario requirements.
- Allow limited physical examination when specified and trained for safety.
- Maintain confidentiality of all student performance and program materials.
- Participate in training sessions to learn cases, behaviors, timing, and feedback models.
Required Qualifications
- Strong reliability, punctuality, and ability to follow instructions.
- Excellent listening and communication skills.
- Ability to memorize case details and portray them consistently.
- Comfort with repeated clinical examinations that are non-invasive and trained for safety.
- Professionalism and ability to maintain confidentiality.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience as an SP, actor, educator, or in performance-based roles.
- Experience providing structured feedback to learners.
- Comfort portraying emotionally complex scenarios (grief, anxiety, chronic illness) when applicable.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, or lie down for periods depending on scenario needs.
- Tolerance for basic physical examination (non-invasive only).
- Ability to portray symptoms such as pain, shortness of breath, or weakness as scripted.
Work Schedule
- Scheduled on an as-needed basis depending on simulation events.
- Encounters may occur during daytime, evenings, or weekends based on program needs.

Compensation
