Student Engineering Program Interns for Industrial / Systems Engineering
Job Summary
The Industrial Engineering Intern will be part of the Student Engineer Program (SEP) and will support process improvement, operational efficiency, and data-driven decision-making across the organization. Working under the guidance of senior engineers and process improvement leaders, the intern will assist with analyzing workflows, documenting processes, assisting with Lean Six Sigma and Kaizen initiatives, and developing recommendations that enhance key operational, safety and financial metrics
This role is ideal for a student pursuing a degree in Industrial Engineering or Systems Engineering who wants hands-on experience applying analytical skills in a real-world operational environment.
Key Responsibilities
Process Analysis & Improvement
- Conduct workflow observations and analyses to identify inefficiencies and improvement opportunities.
- Map current-state and future-state processes using tools such as SIPOC, value stream mapping, and swimlane diagrams.
- Assist in developing recommendations to improve productivity, reduce waste, and streamline operations.
- Support Lean, Kaizen, and other operational excellence initiatives.
Data & Performance Analytics
- Collect, organize, and analyze operational and performance data to identify trends and root causes.
- Support building performance dashboards by preparing data and documenting requirements for visualization tools (e.g., Power BI).
- Create clear and concise reports, charts, and presentations for leadership review.
Project Support
- Assist with planning, tracking, and implementing improvement initiatives.
- Support stakeholder interviews, workshops, and cross-functional meetings.
- Document project requirements, process changes, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Qualifications
Education
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Industrial Engineering or Systems Engineering.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Foundational understanding of Industrial Engineering principles such as workflow design, process optimization, forecasting, ergonomics, and systems analysis.
- Familiarity with process improvement methodologies (Lean, Six Sigma, PDCA).
- Experience with process mapping tools (Visio, Miro, Lucidchart, or equivalent).
- Basic proficiency in data analysis using Excel, Python, R, or similar tools.
- Exposure to data visualization concepts; ability to understand and communicate requirements to analysts who use tools like Power BI or Tableau.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
- Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
