Undergraduate Summer Research Assistant – Education Policy

Dr. Katharine Sadowski, an applied micro-economist and Assistant Professor of Education, is seeking a summer research assistant to support a study on the impact of California’s Transitional Kindergarten (TK) expansion on local childcare supply. The research assistant will work closely with Dr. Sadowski and contribute to all stages of the project, including data collection, management, and analysis. This is a full-time, 10-week internship over the summer term. This internship is a great fit for undergraduate students looking to build quantitative research skills through hands-on work with large administrative datasets. Students interested in economics, data science, public policy, or education will gain experience in data management, statistical analysis, and applied causal research related to early childhood policy.

 

Qualifications:

  • Interest in education policy
  • Background in economics, public policy, or a related quantitative field
  • Experience with Stata, Python, or R
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, as well as attention to detail

Key Responsibilities

  • Collecting Data: Compile publicly available data on childcare providers.
  • Data Management and Cleaning: Build a longitudinal dataset of childcare providers by processing, merging, and cleaning raw provider data.
  • Analysis: Assist in applying quasi-experimental methods to estimate the effects of TK expansion on local childcare supply.

 

This full-time undergraduate student summer internship comes with a $8,500 stipend, with an additional need-based supplement of up to $1,500 (if applicable).
