Member Benefits Intern (Summer 2026)

Position Summary

The Member Benefits Intern will have the opportunity to work closely alongside members of our Member Benefits and Finance department. The incumbent will research beneficiaries and perform various administrative tasks and activities, as well as effectively communicating with NYSTRS staff and members and beneficiaries.

The Department is seeking to fill two (2) student intern opportunities for the Summer of 2026.

Minimum Qualifications

Eligible candidates must be enrolled in a full-time bachelor's or master's degree program with at least one semester left to complete all degree requirements after the internship.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to providing exceptional customer service
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite including Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Excel
  • Experience and comfort speaking to a cross-functional, multi-level group
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
  • Significant attention to detail
  • Ability to show initiative and work independently

Work Modality

Currently we have a hybrid work schedule which may be subject to change in the future.

Job Duties

The duties of the Member Benefits Intern include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Research the location of beneficiaries
  • Draft letters and call beneficiaries
  • Conduct research on industry best practices and emerging trends to locate beneficiaries
  • Research the requirements to request death certificates in various states
  • Request death certificate
  • Track progress, priorities, and deadlines of Benefits projects
  • Develop procedures and business processes to help locate benefit recipients
  • Determine if there are ways to make payments without the usual documentation we require
  • Process beneficiary updates
  • Process returned mail
  • Process refunds
  • Research files on the abandoned to locate for payment
  • Provide general administrative support to the Benefits team

This position is a non-graded position

$20.00 per hour
