Paid Intern/Ambassador - Your Safe Place, San Diego City Attorney's Office (6 months)
Overview:
The City of San Diego consists of more than 30 operational departments. Internships are available when project-based opportunities arise amongst departments. With general supervision, an internship provides part-time employment opportunities for students enrolled in a continuing education, traditional education, or training program to gain hands-on experience related to their career interests or area of study.
Your Safe Place - The San Diego Family Justice Center (YSP), part of the San Diego City Attorney’s Office, is dedicated to supporting those who have experienced domestic violence, sexual assault, family violence, older and dependent adult abuse, and sex trafficking. YSP provides a safe environment for clients to receive safety and supportive services. For more information see https://www.sandiego.gov/yoursafeplace. YSP is recruiting for a paid Intern/Ambassador position available in January 2026.
Position Commitment:
Up to 20 hours a week (in person). Hours must be consistent and logged. Intern required to go through a domestic violence training program, complete a background check, and have strong computer skills.
Example of Duties:
Duties and responsibilities assigned to interns will vary depending on the department they are assigned; these include but are not limited to: assisting with planning events, conducting research, collecting and analyzing data, assisting with projects, preparing reports and presentations, attending internal and external stakeholders’ meetings, and field work. Work will be project-based, temporary, and not compromise the work of a bargaining unit employee.
Exemplary job duties include, but are not limited to:
- Facilitating a warm and trauma-informed reception and intake process in person and via phone
- Working closely with the YSP’s Care Coordinators to assist in real-time client needs
- Assist in client form completion and submission
- Data collection and entry into database
- Engaging with clients, community agencies, and general public via telephone
- Providing translation services, if applicable
- Assisting in child supervision while adult gets services
- Assisting in preparation and participating in community outreach events
- Complete various research projects
- Assisting clients with remote hearings and/or court accompaniment
- Clerical support with legal protections, victim compensation, and other confidential safety supports
- Special projects such as program development, grant writing, and fundraising events
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess:
- A strong record of academic achievement
- Bilingual Highly Desirable
- Interest in social services, criminal justice, political science, public health, or a related field
- Ability to communicate clearly and succinctly
- Strong writing and oral advocacy skills
- Detail-oriented skills, with ability to prioritize assignments and independently manage a workload; demonstrated good judgment and initiative, and ability to interact effectively with different personalities and work styles
- Commitment to adhering to the highest standards of integrity and professional ethics
- Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
Minimum Requirements:
- 15 ½ years of age or older.
- Must be a United States citizen or have the current legal right to work in the United States.
- Requirements vary and are based on the department and specific internship role.
Compensation & Benefits:
- Internships may be paid or unpaid, based on availability of funds. Paid internships will be compensated at an hourly rate consistent with Exhibit C of the Salary Ordinance and commensurate with an applicant’s education level.
- Not eligible to receive paid vacation leave, paid holidays, and/or any type of City-sponsored insurance.
- Will participate in the City’s Defined Benefit Plan administered by the San Diego City Employees’ Retirement System (SDCERS).
- Will receive a free transit pass (including MTS Trolley, MTS Bus, and all Rapid and Rapid Express bus services).
- Will accrue paid sick leave while employed in a paid internship (eligible for use after 90 days of employment).
