Digital Technologies Intern

What Do We Do?

Business Unit: Digital 

 

The Digital Department at Carpenter Technology partners closely with IT, manufacturing, metallurgy, and business leaders to extract, transform, and analyze data from many enterprise and manufacturing systems. We build scalable data models and generate insights using modern analytics, advanced machine learning, agentic AI, and artificial intelligence technologies to support operational excellence across the organization.

 

Carpenter Technology is a global leader in the development and manufacture of specialty alloys and advanced materials, serving critical industries including aerospace, defense, energy, medical, and transportation. Our digital initiatives directly support these highly complex manufacturing operations by improving quality, reliability, and performance at scale.

 

Ongoing Projects 

 

Our team is actively working on initiatives such as:

  • Understanding relationships across manufacturing systems to drive quality, throughput, and reliability insights using advanced analytics and AI enabled models
  • Preparing and shaping complex data so it can be effectively used by metallurgists, machine operators, and technical leaders, including AI assisted analytical workflows
  • Modeling, integrating, and unifying data across multiple systems to create a consistent, trusted foundation for analytics, machine learning, and agentic AI systems
  • Exploring the use of AI agents and automation technologies to assist with data discovery, monitoring, validation, and insight generation
  • Delivering meaningful, easy to interpret visualizations and AI augmented analytics experiences for complex manufacturing data

 

Your Role as an Intern 

You will be a part of a dynamic team, supporting the following tasks:

 

This role is ideal for a student interested in data, analytics, and artificial intelligence who wants practical experience applying modern digital and AI technologies to solve real-world manufacturing challenges. You’ll gain exposure to complex systems, work alongside experienced professionals, and see how data  and AI driven insights directly impact operations at scale.

 

The Digital Intern will contribute to active data and digital initiatives by supporting both technical development and business adoption efforts. Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with the preparation, validation, and organization of manufacturing and enterprise data for analysis, reporting, and AI use cases
  • Helping build and maintain data assets, documentation, and process artifacts that support analytics, machine learning, and AI driven solutions

What Do We Require? 

You must be:

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program majoring in Data Science, Data Engineering, Computer Science, Analytics or a related field
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Willing and able to work on-site at our Reading, PA location.
  • Applicants MUST be US Citizens or Green Card Holders due to Carpenter’s government contracts.
  • The ideal candidate will bring foundational technical skills and a strong interest in modern data, analytics, and AI technologies. Prior experience in all areas is not required, but exposure to the following is a plus:
    • SQL for querying and preparing data from relational data sources
    • Python or similar programming languages for data analysis, scripting, or AI experimentation
    • Fundamental understanding of data modeling concepts and relational database structures
    • Introductory knowledge of analytics, statistics, machine learning, or artificial intelligence concepts
    • Familiarity with AI assisted analytics, generative AI, or agent based AI workflows (academic, project, or personal experience)
    • Experience with data visualization or reporting tools such as Power BI or similar platforms
    • Exposure to Microsoft Fabric, including concepts such as Lakehouse architectures, data pipelines, warehouses, OneLake, semantic models, or AI enabled capabilities within the Microsoft ecosystem
  • Ideal Candidate Characteristics
    • Comfortable and willing to work in a heavy machinery / industrial manufacturing environment
    • Able to collaborate effectively in a team-oriented setting
    • Strong time-management and task prioritization skills
    • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities

Pay Range

Hourly rates are based on: 1 – Program of study; 2 – Degree type (i.e., Bachelor’s); 3 – Progression in degree (i.e., 1st year, 2nd year, etc.). The range for this position is $22.00 - $25.00 per hour. 

 

 

Commuting/Housing Assistance (If Eligible)

Interns who must commute to work from outside the immediate Reading, PA area (over 50 miles one-way), will be paid a one-time lump sum payment of $2,400 (less applicable taxes) as excessive commute allowance. Interns who choose to temporarily relocate from outside the immediate Reading, PA area (moving over 50 miles one-way), will be paid a one-time lump sum payment of $4,800 (less applicable taxes) as a housing allowance. If applicable, this payment would be made during the first payroll cycle, which would be three or four weeks following the internship start date.
