Graduate Assistant in the International Students and Scholars Office

Job Descriptions:

Graduate Administrative Assistants(GAs) provide approximately 20 hours of service per week, over the course of a semester that are purely administrative duties. The Graduate Assistant for the International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) is an Oakland University graduate student employed in the ISSO. The GA, under the direction of the International Adviser of ISSO, is involved in the overseeing of the Create American International Relations "CAIR" Program. In addition, the GA will collaborate with University Housing on the International Village living and learning community. GA will help with cultural events/seminars organized by the ISSO. 

Qualifications:

Graduate Assistants must be fully admitted and enrolled for at least 8 credits for the academic year in a graduate program. Graduate course work and/or research must contribute directly to the satisfaction of Oakland's degree requirements. Graduate assistants must have and maintain good academic standing (3.0 grade point average).

Will assist with the planning of the Create American International Relations "CAIR" Program which includes: monitoring an application form for students and for faculty and staff, to be able to establish a process to match international students with host family, maintaining a database of all people involved, having a streamline process of communication with students and faculty and staff, matching students with appropriate host family, Promote this program campus wide and locally.

Essential duties:

Design recruitment presentation materials for the host family program and resources consistent with the ISSO goals, be able to present it to OU members.

Assist with international learning community called International Village in the university apartments. Work with housing staff to create multicultural program for on campus housing students.

Assists the Intl. Adviser with on campus programming efforts including the negotiation and reservation of facilities, catering, advertising and marketing, getting international students and scholars involved and other logistics for international programs. Coordinate on campus events for international students and scholars.

Create programming surveys and collect data to evaluate each program.

Assist the Intl. Adviser in strategic communications with international students and scholars, OU’s departments, faculty, staff, including e-mail, print, and new media.

Represent the University, the ISSO, its mission and features to a broad range of constituents in person, on the telephone, and/or via e-mail.

Other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications:

Applicants must be admitted and enrolled in an Oakland University graduate program.

Ability to effectively work and communicate with prospective students, current students, family members, alumni, office colleagues, other university administrators and faculty, elementary, middle school and high school administrators and faculty.

Must possess strong oral and written communications skills.

Must possess strong computer skills using Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Word.

Must be detail oriented and employ excellent customer service skills.

Two years of programming experience preferred.

Ability to effectively lead and motivate international students to become familiar with our programs and to get involved.

Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and handle multiple tasks at once.

International experience preferred.

Must possess a strong desire to positively represent Oakland University and the ISSO.

Must be able to work on projects independently.

Expectations of the GA is 2 semesters commitment

Tuition:

Tuition (eight credits per semester or a total of 16 credits) will be compensated. Any additional credits and class fees, including books, will be the responsibility of the student. 

Compensation:

Student will receive a pay check (via direct deposit if desired) on the last business day of each month for the duration of the assistantship.
