Library & Archives Intern

10 Week internship. $14/hour with a $1,000 housing stipend. 

Summary: To support Special Collections/Archives patron reference and research for the McCracken Research Library. Will also include work in other library areas, including cataloging, assisting with collection storage projects, and digitization efforts.

Job Duties: • Researching reference questions for BBCW staff and patrons of the BBCW, including topical themes of William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody and Buffalo Bill’s Wild West exhibition, Plains Indian history and culture, firearms history and technology, Western American Art History, Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and Northern Rocky Mountains natural history and National Parks therein, and general western history and culture. • Cataloguing of library materials, under supervision of Cataloguer. • Retrieval and shelving of library/archival materials within compact shelving areas within secure vaults. • Assist and monitor researchers, maintaining security within the library Reading Room. • Materials conservation practices, including digitization for preservation and access. • Interlibrary Loan (ILL) procedures for obtaining research material for BBCW staff. • Use of WYLD (Wyoming Libraries Database), OCLC CONTENTdm, Archives Space, OCLC Worldcat, and ARGUS systems. This may include editing existing catalog records or creation of new records. • Regular attendance at Intern seminars and presentations. • Other duties as assigned

Competencies: • Prefer candidates with a broad interest in the history and culture of the American West. Applicable specialized interests include William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody and the frontier West, Native American studies, western American Art History, Yellowstone National Park and its natural history, and firearms history and technology. • Experience/knowledge of current library special collections and archives/manuscripts practices, general library science, public history, and scholarly research methods preferred. • Working knowledge of Library of Congress call number system. • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with the Center’s professional colleagues and other BBCW interns. • Ability to work within both open public areas and high security, vaulted areas. • Basic computer skills. • Efficient work habits and organizational skills, detail oriented. • Good communication skills, verbal as well as written. In person, telephone, and internet communications are frequent for patron and staff interactions. • Positive professional demeanor. • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills, often working with a wide variety of age groups and educational backgrounds, from middle-school classes to advanced academics/scholars/authors. • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. • Willingness to live and work in a small rural tourist town with nearby pristine wilderness.

Supervisory Responsibilities: • None

Required Education and Experience: • Enrollment in a graduate program in library science, archival studies, museum studies, public history, art history, anthropology, or an allied field; or, no more than two years post-graduation from such a graduate program. • Some experience working in a library, archive, or museum, or formal coursework in same preferred. • Working knowledge of Library of Congress call number system. • Experience or coursework in formal library cataloging.
