Communications and Engagement Intern

Job summary:  

CMAP Interns participate in projects and engage in activities that support the work of the agency. The CMAP internship program runs June-July and interns work up to 29 hours per week during summer months.  Internships may be extended through the academic year at the discretion of the agency with work hours reduced to 29 hours per pay period. 

 

Duties/responsibilities:  

Organizational stewardship:  

  • ​​Collaborate with team members to ensure project goals are met within the specified timeline.​ 
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of project documentation. 
  • Gain hands on experience with the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in real-life situations.  Assist in the planning, execution, and monitoring of projects.

Communications/people:  

  • ​​Attend and actively participate in team meetings, offering insights and suggestions for improvement.​ 

Execution/project management:  

  • ​​Support project managers in various administrative tasks related to project coordination.​ 
  • Learn to utilize project management tools to track progress and communication with team members. 

Subject matter expertise/technical skills:  

  • ​Write and copyedit; develop content for newsletters, social media, and website; some graphic design​ 
  • ​​​Plan and support public engagement events; manage virtual engagement tools such as Zoom and online polling​ 
  • ​​Conduct general research and analyze data. ​​ 

Required skills/abilities:  

  • Ability to use clear communication to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external partners, agencies, and communities and maintain effective harmonious relationships.  
  • Ability to effectively demonstrate and uphold CMAP’s core values.  
  • Ability to work effectively in a hybrid environment promoting resourcefulness and efficient practices. 
  • Knowledge of computer systems and application tools, including Microsoft Office products. 
  • Ability to efficiently manage work, projects, and multiple responsibilities to meet deadlines and agency expectations. 

Education and experience: 

  • ​​Minimum requirements include enrollment in a bachelor's degree program and entering junior or senior status by fall term or enrolled in graduate studies. 
  • ​Interest in communications, public engagement, urban/regional planning, or related field. 

Physical requirements:  

  • ​​Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer​. 
  • Prolonged periods of sitting.
