Computer Scientist: Information Delivery for Farm Management

The Adaptive Cropping Systems Laboratory (ACSL) at USDA-ARS Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (BARC), Beltsville, Maryland is seeking a computer scientist to further develop a web-based information delivery system (IDS) and work on its deployment. The IDS integrates on-farm data sources, crop/soil models, and weather forecasts to provide in-season decision support to end-users with regards to optimizing site-specific farm management. The candidate will carry out computer programming associated with database development, back-end and front-end graphical user interface components of the IDS, and integration and testing of our crop/soil models. The database development will include capturing model-based scenario input/output information which can be queried in real-time. Participant will collaborate with scientific staff to port components of an existing Windows desktop graphical user interface into this web-based system. Opportunities to develop portable versions of our models using artificial intelligence for interacting with mobile platforms can also be pursued. Candidate will work closely with multiple scientists in academic, team-oriented, friendly environment.
The preferred candidate is a self-starter with postgraduate level experience (BS or MS with 3 + years) in crop science / data science or related field with demonstrated experience in software engineering. Selection factors include coding proficiency / experience in: API and front-end development (eg. HTML, CSS, JavaScript); programming languages (e.g. PYTHON); relational databases and query languages (e.g. SQL); testing/troubleshooting software programming using debugging tools; source control management (e.g. Git); Docker containers.
Position is full-time, 40-hrs week with potential for multiple-year extension and is located in Beltsville, Maryland. Salary and Benefits are competitive and commensurate with candidate experience.
