Administrator's Office Intern

The Administrator’s Office Intern will be a key contributor on a collaborative team working to improve how Kent County operates. This is a hands-on role designed for one motivated student who wants meaningful experience working on real projects that support better decision-making, stronger processes, and effective public service.

In this role, the intern will work closely with experienced professionals in public administration and gain practical experience in data governance, analytics, policy-focused research, process improvement, and survey design and analysis. The position offers the opportunity to collaborate across departments, contribute to impactful initiatives, and see firsthand how data and policy inform day-to-day county operations.

This position is ideal for a student in an MPA, public policy, public administration, or a related program who is curious, analytical, and interested in building real-world skills while making a tangible impact in local government.

A successful candidate will possess the following skills:

Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to synthesize information from multiple sources. 

Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects.

Attention to detail and accuracy, particularly when preparing materials for leadership and decision-making.

Excellent interpersonal and listening skills, along with strong oral and written communication skills.

Ability to maintain strict neutrality and confidentiality while exercising sound judgement.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment.

Hours are flexible, with an anticipated commitment of at least 10 hours per week. The internship is based in the Kent County Administrator’s Office, located in downtown Grand Rapids. Parking expenses will be reimbursed. Occasional travel may be required.

 

Examples Of Essential Duties:

Collaborate within cross-functional teams to implement organizational improvement initiatives and contribute to practical, data-informed solutions.

Assist with research, analysis, and documentation related to County initiatives, including preparing reports, presentations, memos, and other materials for internal use and leadership review.

Support project work by helping to abstract and consolidate county-level data, creating visual summaries, and preparing concise reports from various software platforms to support decision-making.

Attend and observe, including Board of Commissioners, Standing Committees, and Department Director meetings to gain exposure to policy development, governance, and executive level decision-making 

Perform other tasks as required and directed by the direct Supervisor or the County Administrator in support of office operations and priority initiatives.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Currently enrolled in an associate, bachelor’s, or master’s degree program in Public Administration or a related field, with a strong interest in public administration, data analytics, finance, or related fields.

Familiarity or expertise with new technologies, including experience with Microsoft Office, including word-processing, spreadsheet, and database applications software.
