Software Engineering Summer Analyst/Associate (AI/ML Platform)

Tempus’s AI Platform (Air) team is seeking a highly qualified Software Engineering Summer Analyst/Associate to work with us for the summer of 2026. The team is building the platform systems for scientists and engineers to deliver smarter medical tests to patients and providers. Advances in the platform support faster development and deployment of our innovative technology and science.

As a Software Engineering Summer Analyst/Associate on Tempus’s AI Platform team, you will:
 

  • Apply skills and knowledge learned in the classroom to on-the-job experiences.
  • Work on projects focused on building, evaluating, and deploying sophisticated AI and Large Language Model (LLM) applications.
  • Help build and enhance the infrastructure that enables our teams to build LLM agents, use multiple LLMs, run AI experiments, conduct model evaluations, monitor application performance, and manage the end-to-end lifecycle of AI systems.
  • Work on comprehensive, value-added project(s) that help enhance the fields of science and technology.
  • Collaborate with teams/colleagues in a fast-paced environment.
  • Gain professional development & build relationships with peers from across the country.
     

Anticipated Summer Project(s):

  • Learn and contribute to the scalability and sustainability of the core platform that supports our AI/ML systems in the cloud.
  • Join one of our engineering pods to collaborate with Product Managers and other engineers to design and build a major new feature for our internal AI platform.
     

Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or a related quantitative field (undergraduate completion in summer of 2027).
  • 3.0+ GPA preferred.
  • A GitHub or other online portfolio demonstrating software development projects is strongly preferred, especially those involving AI application development, LLMs, or MLOps.
  • Experience with Python and cloud technologies (GCP, AWS) is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with the AI application lifecycle, including data processing, experimentation, evaluation, and monitoring is a plus.
  • Knowledge of frameworks and libraries like LangChain, Hugging Face, or other LLM-related tools is a significant advantage.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills with high attention to detail, a curiosity to learn, and a drive to improve.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A self-starter with the ability to work independently as well as in collaboration with others in a fast-paced environment. You are excited by the challenge of building and scaling tools in real-time.

 

Additional Details:

  • You will spend 9 or 11 weeks working in our Chicago office.
  • The internship will be a hybrid, onsite 3 days/week with the option to work remotely the remaining days.
  • The program will run in two waves, commencing June/July and running through August/September (dependent upon your school calendar and availability).
  • A competitive hourly wage will be provided for the summer employment and a relocation bonus to help offset some of the relocation costs and resources to help you find housing.
