Program Overview

The Underwriting Scholar Program is a full-time summer program designed for current students and recent graduates interested in pursuing a career in E&S underwriting. Over 10–12 weeks during the summer, Scholars will gain hands-on exposure to both New Business and Renewal underwriting, learning how underwriting decisions are made, executed, and managed within a growing specialty insurance carrier.

This program is structured to provide real underwriting experience, mentorship, and professional development. High-performing Scholars may be considered for full-time Underwriter Associate roles following program completion.

Function

Underwriting Scholars support the underwriting organization by learning how coverage forms, rating plans, and underwriting guidelines are applied to evaluate, select, and price individual risks. The program emphasizes proper risk classification, data accuracy, adherence to underwriting standards, and consistency with Ategrity’s underwriting philosophy.

Scholars will contribute to both new business evaluation and renewal execution, supporting profitability, retention, and portfolio health across Ategrity’s underwriting channels.

Role & Learning Objectives

Underwriting Scholars will work alongside experienced underwriters across Small Business, Digital, Casualty, Property, Management and Professional Liability segments.

During the summer program, Scholars will:

 

  • Build foundational knowledge of E&S underwriting
  • Support both new business submissions and renewal reviews
  • Develop analytical, communication, and underwriting judgment skills
  • Understand how underwriting decisions impact portfolio performance
  • Scholars operate under close supervision with defined authority and structured coaching.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in reviewing new business submissions and renewal accounts for acceptability based on underwriting guidelines and assigned authority
  • Support underwriting of multiple classes of commercial P&C business while learning profitability and SLA expectations
  • Analyze exposure data, loss history, pricing outputs, and underwriting system data
  • Prepare underwriting summaries, risk assessments, and renewal comparisons
  • Communicate clearly with internal partners including Underwriting, Service & Delivery, and Product teams
  • Observe and participate in broker and General Agent interactions
  • Apply Ategrity’s underwriting philosophy consistently across assigned work
  • Support policy servicing activities in coordination with Service & Delivery teams
  • Participate in structured training sessions, underwriting workshops, and capstone-style case studies

Qualifications & Eligibility

  • Current undergraduate or graduate student OR recent graduate (within the last 1–2 years)
  • Strong interest in insurance, risk management, finance, economics, analytics, or business
  • 0–2 years of experience in insurance, underwriting, or related analytical roles (not required)
  • Interest in commercial P&C and E&S underwriting
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced learning environment
  • Proficiency or willingness to learn tools such as Excel, Outlook, Workbench, Ategrity One, and AI-enabled tools
