Who We Are:

Join the Surface Engineering & Materials Chemistry Section within the Materials Engineering Department as a Summer Intern! Our team makes and characterizes materials using additive manufacturing processes to enhance the properties of components. As a member of the team, you will help develop creative solutions for existing and next-generation technologies for both government and industry clients. You will have the opportunity to work with scientists and engineers who are experts in their fields and gain exposure to a diverse array of projects and technologies.

Objectives of this Role:

  • Work alongside engineering staff to perform experiments in metals additive manufacturing and materials characterization, materials fabrication, process optimization and development.
  • Be a solution-oriented problem solver that exercises creativity and independent judgement in determining approaches to solve a wide range of technical problems.
  • Learn new technical skills to complete project work and develop new materials and processes.
  • Get exposed to a variety of projects and real world technical problems.
  • Summer 2026 internship.

Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:

  • Assists with building components, subunits, models, and adaptations of standard equipment.
  • Performs experiments; documents in lab notebook, interprets data to determine pass/fail criteria for next steps.
  • Hands-on work in laboratory environments. Quickly learn additive manufacturing and material synthesis processes.

Requirements:

  • Must be pursuing a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or Material Science and Engineering.
  • 0 years: Strong interest in materials, additive manufacturing, technical challenges and problem solving.
  • Strong Communication Skills.
  • A valid/clear driver's license is required.

Special Requirements:

Must be a U.S. person (i.e., U.S. citizen, non-U.S. citizen national, lawful permanent resident, asylee, or refugee) due to ITAR work in section.
