Rec Well - Group X Instructor (Non-Certified) (Summer 2026, Fall 2026-Winter 2027)
JOB SUMMARY
Non-Certified Group X Instructors work under the supervision of the Fitness Coordinator and, when applicable, a School of Health Sciences professor to lead safe, engaging, and effective group exercise classes. This role is designed for students pursuing a Group Exercise Instructor certification and provides hands-on teaching experience in a structured, supportive environment.
Non-Certified Group X Instructors are responsible for planning and delivering approved class formats, demonstrating proper exercise techniques, providing appropriate modifications, and fostering an inclusive and motivating atmosphere for participants of all fitness levels. All instructional responsibilities are performed in alignment with University Recreation and Well-Being policies, industry best practices, and departmental oversight to ensure participant safety and instructional quality.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Demonstrate positive customer service experiences
- Experience teaching group exercise classes to various populations.
- Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds
- Ability to Work Independently: Proven track record of effectively managing time and tasks with minimal supervision while consistently meeting deadlines and achieving goals.
- Strong Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication abilities and demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with team members and stakeholders.
- Attention to Detail: Exceptional focus on accuracy and thoroughness, ensuring that all tasks are completed with care. Skilled in identifying potential errors or areas for improvement in processes.
- Professionalism: Maintains a high standard of professionalism in all interactions, demonstrating respect, courtesy, and a positive attitude in fast-paced environments.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
- Teach a minimum of one approved Group X class per week at the Oakland University Recreation Center
- Greet and engage participants to create a welcoming and inclusive class environment
- Plan and deliver safe, effective, and complete Group X classes at designated times approved by the Fitness Coordinator
- Create class formats, timing, playlists, and equipment plans for each class
- Submit all Group X class formats for review and approval by the Fitness Coordinator and respective School of Health Sciences professor at least three days prior to instruction
- Verbally provide safety cues and appropriate exercise modifications throughout class
- Monitor participants for proper form and exercise execution
- Maintain and organize equipment and supplies in studios and annex spaces before and after each class
- Enforce capacity limits and recognize potential safety concerns within instructional spaces
- Work with the Building Manager if support is needed during instruction time
- Provide appropriate care in emergency situations as outlined in the Emergency Action Plan
- Enforce all Recreation Center and Group X policies and procedures
- Attend all required trainings, skills evaluations, staff meetings, and performance check-ins

COMPENSATION
- $20/hour - Minimum rate for new hires
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Must be available to work a minimum of 2–4 hours per week
- Must be available to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and early mornings.
- Attend all scheduled staff meetings, trainings, and evaluations
- Act in accordance with the Clery Act as a mandated reporter and carry out responsibilities in reporting a crime on campus as a University Recreation and Well-Being staff member.
- Must be enrolled part-time, at least 6 credit hours per semester for undergraduate students and 4 credit hours for graduate students at Oakland University.
- Required to have taken, or are actively enrolled in, EXS 1000 or EXS 1100
- Must obtain American Red Cross First Aid, CPR, and AED Certification upon hire
- Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.
PATH TO CERTIFICATION
This position is designed to support students pursuing a nationally recognized Group Exercise Instructor certification (ACE, AFAA, NASM, ISSA, ACSM, or other approved organizations).
- Within 60 days of employment, the instructor must select a certifying organization approved by University Recreation and Well-Being
- Within six months of employment, the instructor must sit for their selected certification exam
- Certification timelines must be approved by the Fitness Coordinator
- If the exam is not passed on the first attempt, the instructor must reschedule within the timeframe provided by the certifying organization
- Any fees associated with late rescheduling are the responsibility of the instructor
- Upon certification, the instructor must complete a minimum of 20 hours of paid Group X instruction with University Recreation and Well-Being
Non-Certified Group X Instructors may not:
- Teach Group X classes without written approval from the Fitness Coordinator
- Represent themselves as a certified Group X Instructor prior to obtaining certification
- Sell Group X class passes or engage in unauthorized promotional activity
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
- Group X Instructors report directly to the Fitness Coordinator.
- Group X Instructors report indirectly to the Fitness Team Lead and Assistant Director of Fitness and Well-Being.
- Additionally, Group X Instructors may receive on-duty requests or instruction from any Rec Well professional staff member.
